If the L-pad goes, it shouldn't affect your mid/woofer. L-Pad is short for Loss-Pad. It works by soaking up some of the power that the speaker would otherwise see, so when you 'turn it down' you're in effect letting the pad see more power and the speaker less (in other words, you're turning the L-Pad up, so it sees more signal). Of course, if you had a problem with the l-pad that shows up on the Avatar, you could certainly replace it with a heftier one for not too much cost.

Do you know that they use the same "dinky little" pads on the TB513? There should be one for tweet and one for the 6" mid.

Maybe I'm in some freakish minority, but in my 30+ years of playing, I've never destroyed an l-pad in anything.
I never turn them all the way off either, though they are generally set at about 30% on...

When in doubt, call Dave. Just spoke with him and questioned him about the L-pad situation. He said that the problems of the L-pad frying in their older cabs have been remedied. When turned down/off, the old L-pad was getting "heat" sent to it and would eventually fry. The crossover was completely redesigned, and the new L-pad apparently has some way to dissipate the heat. I think he said vent or cap? He said there is no issue with turning it down and to play it however I want. They have tested the cab extensively with the tweeter turned all the way down, and haven't had any problems with it cooking or overheating.

+1 The L-Pad burning out is an old, old issue that has not been an issue for many, many years with these types of circuits. I don't think I've ever heard of one blowing, on a tweeter or mid driver. If it worries anyone who does not dig the tweeter, just turn down most of the way and you won't even hear it.

The only downside to this I can see is that you lose just a touch of the top end of the mid driver response (assuming the crossover is a true crossover and not just a hi pass for the tweeter). However, this particular 15/6/1 execution has a very high crossover point for the tweeter (I think 5K), so probably no issue at all.

This thing is an absolute beast. With the svt 7's ultra low button engaged it has brutal low end. But still very clear. Can't wait to play my 5 through it. With the fretless I need to roll back the tone knobs a bit more than I'm used to to get warm mwah that's not overly crispy. Puts a smile on my face every time I play through it. No matter what amp I test out, I always come back to ampeg. My tone for sure. And this cab really lets it sing/thump/destroy. I have the tweet at about 25% and dial out some highs on the Mike Lull. Still has a crisp top end with out being obnoxious. Best gear purchase I've made to date.

Correct. 800hz and 5khz are the cossover points.

yes, and the cutoff frequency for the mid driver is well chosen (5k) but i gotta tell you, i am totally loving my 210av. chef's right that it won't be as deep on the low end, but it does have the response of an svt 810e, and sounds eerily like a small version of my vintage 810 from 73. this avatar seems like a very cool cab for not much money, but i do really like the ampeg.

In a week, the price with Tolex will be going up to $450, as a transition out of the introductory off price, and a week or so after that, they'll be $499.

In a week, it will be offered with LineX for $500, and a week or so later, when the intro period ends, it will be $550 with LineX.

Chris Breese, If you want an Ampeg sound...buy Ampeg gear. The Avatar is not the 'Ampeg' sound...just depends what you are going for.


I can say with confidence after gigging this cab about 5 times in the last week...it is seriously a no brainer for the intro price of $399 if you are looking for a new cab with a 15' or a 15' 3 way design. New vids coming soon.

Big +1. I'm not gigging but for loud basement jams it's been rockin' my world. The sound is unbelievably good for $400, and I would not have been disappointed had I paid a hundred or two more.
