I was basing it on Dave saying he was using a generic eminence 800hz crossover in the previous thread, I think, but I could be misremembering.

At the price point I wouldn't expect any magic, but at least it's not 1200hz generic selenium - I've got one of those and it has some mid frequency craziness i've noticed after A/B'ing it to my Passinwind crossover :)

For me it's no contest. By the time I bought the tools I needed and made mistakes cutting and buying more wood to cut gain, screw up the wiring, etc., I cold probably buy a couple of these.

You're probably into a 15/6 for that price, if not more, depending upon how you spec out the hardware. The drivers alone will cost you 300 once you put in shipping, etc.

There are some cheaper sources for woofers/mid if you're careful - you should expect to pay about 400-450 bucks for a fEarful by the time you get everything done IF you own all the tools you need already and you use affordable wood.

You could easily spend more (upgraded crossover components, professional covering, nice grille, etc).

No big surprise.

DIY enthusiasts (or those who know they can't get the performance elsewhere) build things that the commercial companies are missing the boat on. They are after performance and not just in the most obvious categories of performance.

A few of the right corners cut, and bulk buying power, and a strategy for reducing labor costs, and you can do things cheaper.

Big surprise ; }

Selling OEM drivers violates the OEM agreement with Eminence, and doing so could cost Dave his driver source. IMO that's probably why Carvin had to switch driver suppliers, they didn't want to play by the rules. AFAIK Bergantino for one won't sell a replacement driver unless the original is sent back to them first. Making a few short term bucks isn't worth the risk.

That’s because if you’re putting the time in, most people want to do it right, and do it with as few compromises as possible. While you can cheap out, if you’re elbow deep in a project, it’s much easier to see your way to spending the few extra dollars when you’ve invested the time and effort. If you’ve been reading fEarful threads as long as many of us have, you’d know that about 30% of the traffic is people posting while trying to cheat the bottom line…and almost always the reply is “then this isn’t the project for you”. Not that it isn’t cost effective (cabs that perform in the same ballpark, but not nearly as good) can cost twice as much or more. From that perspective this is a bargain build.

[FONT=&quot]My original fEarful 15/6 build cost A LOT. Because I paid for the actual box to be built. It was worth it to me, but I certainly wasn’t anywhere near 500 bucks for it. I don’t regret it in the least and every single time I play, I think it was worth the cash. Every time I hear the boxes from out in the room or on stage I KNOW it was worth it.[/FONT]

All told, very interesting news.

...though I'm a little bit surprised at the "but its not a fearful 15/6/1 design copy" -esque responses. Of course its not! Wasn't the whole point of putting the designs out for public consumption and building that they were not to be used for commercial use? So yeah, its got some design differences that may make is a little different (probably inferior) but wouldn't we be up in arms if the did an exact copy of Greenboy's design?

Not at $500 I wouldn't be. :D

Although if it were, I sure would like to see Greenboy get his due for all the R&D he put into it.

The fEarfuls don't break any new ground either, at least as far as the engineering goes. They use engineering concepts that the PA industry has been using for at least thirty years, hi-fi and theatrical for fifty years, and DIYers for seventy. It's not that fEarful is ahead of the curve, just that the electric bass cab industry is at least three decades behind it.
