I've been lurking on this site for years, but I figured I'd finally post something.

My present rig is an Ampeg SVT-4 through an Ampeg 610... I love my svt4, but the 610 has annoyed me for quite a bit due to size, but it served its purpose and I had other priorities financially. Well... one of the speakers went in it and this is a perfect excuse to drop the money on a new cab.

I'm looking at ordering an Avatar B410 NEO to pair with the SVT-4. Thoughts?

I just got a spankin NOS B212 in tweed. 8 ohms. Love the cushy low end but I thought it would be louder than it is. I am using my Walkabout head so it's only putting out 180 watts.
Billy B, what was your experience with the Avatar/Walkabout combination?

I just restored a 1966 Fender bassman Head,
I had no Cabinet.
Avatar was recamended to me and I likes all the reviews.
So after talking with Dave at Avatar, I purched the B212 Cab 4 Ohms.
I cant wait till Wensday to receive it.:hyper:

B212 Neo gets loud with appropriate wattage put into it. 180 watts should get decent volume out of it though. "Loud" is relative. I have run a Shuttle 6.0 (375 watts @ 8 ohms) and a 500-watt GX5 power amp through it and never had to crank either one to get to very illegal (in my apartment) volume levels.

If it's not loud enough, you definitely need to put more amp in back of it. Run the Send from the Walkabout into a decent power amp and move some air! :bassist:

Thanks Mike, I hadn't considered that route. I immediately started looking at a bigger watt amp, but I love that Walkabout tone.

I was comparing volume with my Scout 12 cab and Schroeder 15 cab, which is quite a kick ass lil stack. The Scout is 4 ohm, the Schroeder is 8 but is seemingly the louder of the 2. Very tight for a 15. The Avatar is very old school woof in comparison and is reminding me of amps gone by from the 70's.
I bet this would sound great with a V4B on top.

The Scout 12/Schroeder 15 combo sounds great, I'm sure! But at the end of the day, it's still "just" 180 watts. Again, "loud" is relative and I'm sure for say, an acoustic trio your setup would be overkill. But in a bar-band, rock n roll scenario you're just going to need more beef behind it. If you add a power amp you will keep your Walkabout's tone. Just as an example, as there are many fine poweramps out there, take a look at the QSC GX7. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/QSC-GX7-Stereo-Power-Amplifier?sku=H70032 725 watts per channel at 8 ohms for $600. Amp weighs 16 pounds! The knobs from an amp this powerful 10 years ago weighed that much. The GX5 that I have puts out 500wpc @ 8 ohms. I will admit that the fan is a little noisy at bedroom practice levels when sitting right next to it but at practice/gigs you won't hear it. The GX5 (and I'll assume GX7) is really transparent sounding to me. I hear my bass and my amp/effects. What goes in, comes out, just a whole lot louder. The GX series is not mono-bridgable. They are designed to be run in stereo and provide optimum power into 8 and 4 ohm loads. The GX7 does 1Kw/channel at 4 ohms. Can you imagine this amp with two 4-ohm cabs? I don't need it, but I WANT IT. :bassist:

After messing around today with different combinations (including Scout+Avatar, very pleasing:bassist:) my basic hangup is not about it being loud enough, it's hearing a ragged response to a sharply hit note down low on the B. I'd be happy just to increase that threshold. I'm assuming it's the amp not the cab, since it's rated at 500W I think.
I'll take a look at those QSC's, thanks!

Well...I don't have a lot to offer as I never played loud (or out) with my Walkabout through Avatar cabinets. The 4x10 I had was a 4 ohm cabinet, and the 2x10 was an 8 ohm cabinet. The 4x10 seems pretty loud by itself and the 4x10 and 2x10 together (running the amp at 2.7 ohms) seemed huge.

The only Avatar B212 in-band experience was last summer when I flew out to California to do a gig with some long-time friends. However, I took my LittleMark III head since it was lighter (and the TSA didn't really seem to like it being in my carry-on luggage). The cabinet was an older 8 ohm B212 Delta that belongs to the keyboard player. At the gig, I didn't have to turn the amp up too much to be plenty loud (at least on stage)...but I have absolutely no idea how loud it was in the crowd.

I sat in with an alt country quartet after last night's gig. The bassist has a GK 1001 RB II on the B212 neo cab. The head wasn't cranked but it was plenty loud. I've owned a couple of B 212's Delta and nep. I'd say that 400 to 500 watts clean is about right. You'll have plenty of headroom left on tap.

Tom, I had another thought... I suspect that the woofers in your B212 have 4 ohm voice coils and are connected in series to create the 8 ohm cabinet impedance (my assumption is based on the fact that Avatar offers 4 ohm and 8 ohm 1x12s). Since the Walkabout is known to be happy at 2 ohms, you could rewire your B212 to be a 2 ohm cabinet. This should give you a bit more volume due to the power output increase from 180 watts to (iirc) somewhere around 500 watts.

SHAZAM! as Jethro would say!

I was considering adding a nice Avatar 2 10 I found, but I'd be back in the same boat wouldn't I? I'd be getting more juice (300W) but spreading in around more. Chasing my tail so to speak. It seems silly to get a new head just for this bigger rig if I can do this. I am a total tech dummy, but this sounds simple.

OK boys...............2 questions

My Neo 410 & Neo 212 sound light, not as warm as I thought, I set EQ on the the 700 RB as deep as I think it should be , still a little bright ??? any ideas. are they packed with any sound packing ? or empty ?

how many hours from new , to full break in should they be run at low levels ? 80 ? or more, before I put in more power

BD, what you're calling "light" may actually be the absence of a mid-bass hump. It can take some getting used to. Your bass boost may be making things worse because when you do that on a GK you're boosting only fundamental frequencies. (That bass control is 60 Hz shelving, as I recall.) Try leaving the bass control flat, and cutting treble and high mid instead, and see what happens.

craig.............OK, I dont run any boost, as of yet in these speakers, I do have the hi mid & treble cut to almost nada, usally run in a bit of highs from the SR 500 EQ on the axe. maybe herein lies the problem,i'll try- less bass control, more volumn that might be it
