You looking to hear one alone or in a mix?
Hi Dylan, either / or would be ideal, thanks
Does anyone in this thread know if Spirocore Solo 3/4 size 3886 strings fit on a Lightning Bug without the silk going over the bridge?
@drewk My apologies for missing this! Here's my Lightning Bug in a mix.
Thanks Dylan, sounds great!
For anyone that might be interested, I have for sale here on the forum.
For Sale - Azola Bugbass
New owner of an Azola Bug bass here. I think it is an earlier model; it has single pick up on bass side of the bridge, and the bridge rests on a metal plate. Does anyone know where to find a serial # on the bug bass? I'm curious to know how old this bass is. I am enjoying learning to play this upright style instrument, coming from bass guitar background. I'm making progress, and it is a pleasure to play! Thanks to the info on this thread, I have some new Helicore hybrid lights coming soon. Thanks for any info you can provide regarding the manufacturing dates. Bob
Look at the heel of the neck under the fingerboard extension. Mine is stamped into it no need to take anything apart
Got it, thanks! B7090
If you don't have the key (or table) to understand the serial number, I'm not sure this gives you much information.
Right, I assume the last 2 digits are probably the year. Anyone know the code?
mine is B7062 and Steve Azola said it is the 62nd bass in 1997
Thanks for that. That would seem to make mine the 90th one made in 97.
Anyone else have an Azola Scarab?
Is this a scarab?
^ That is a bug bass2. Nice!
The scarab was Steve’s first acoustic version of what later became the bug bass2. Same shape as the last model bug bass he made but acoustic and with spruce tops. There were some floating top scarabs made as well which have a separation between the top and the body to act as a sound hole.
The bugbass 2 you pictured looks to be near the final iteration (and my favourite) of all the bug basses. The carved bug bass 2; They has fully carved tops, backs and sides, integrated sound bar and post under the bridge just like a full size upright. Yours however has a flat back with a detail around the back panel. Like a cross between a scarab and a carved bugbass 2 I think. Amazing bases IMHO
I have a funny Azola related story. I played a gig last weekend with a singer songwriter at our local county fair. This is a big one that draws people from all over. I'm sitting in the backstage area, that is framed walls with conduit running through it. I look to my right and see an Azola side bout extension hanging from the conduit. This is your typical country fair.... not a lot of jazz or latin music. I remembered that there is a salsa band that usually plays every year on one of the free stages. I am friends with the guy on Facebook (not local), so I sent him a message and sure enough, he left it there 2 years ago. They are playing on Friday so he gets to pick it up then.
