Double Bass Azola EUBs Megathread

My Baby Bass Now strung with my favorite strings for pizz. Eurosonics. I love the tone and love the feel on the fingers. Kinda goes with the Euroacoustic model name, too.

These strings are great for slap. Super easy on the right hand when pulling up on the string. A lot easier than gut strings. Any video examples of the Azola with the Eurosonics?

Not yet. Maybe someday

Tone is gut like. Feel is easy on the fingers. Can play for longer without blistering.

these were 1/2 lights, Azola recommended 1/2 strings. I ended up taking About 4-5 inches off the length.

Any suggestions on improving the tone of my Bug? It's the early generation with just a volume knob. I'm able to control it with my amplification, but it's brighter than I'd prefer.

I've heard that many people pulled the volume pot from the bass and and rewired the pickup to the jack, but I'm not sure if that will brighten or darken the signal. His last iteration of the bug had an EMG preamp matched with a pickup that was built into the bridge. It sounds good but I definitely dial back the treble pot. I'm a big fan of using the leather afterlength mute as a string mute just above the bridge. Less severe than the nino mute (which doesn't work for me... its either too thumpy or falling off my bass). My string recommendation is old Spirocore Solos.

Might be worth talking to Steve Azola about it! He might have some solutions for you.

I've heard good things about a Broughton pedal that incorporates both variable HPF and LPF; LPF to tame the highs.

Thanks all.

On mine (before I sold it), I rewired the pickup directly to the jack.
Then use a preamp with an high input impedance. (Several megohms)
The Fdeck’s HPFPre is very nice and inexpensive.
The higher input impedance makes the tone warmer and with a tighter low-end.

Absolutely, high input impedance of the preamp is important. It likes 10 MOhms.

I’ll try to reach out to Steve Azola too.

I heard back from Steve Azola quickly; he was friendly but it wasn't too helpful. I spent some time today focusing on my tone (more than trying to be decent at playing, which is my usual task on EUB or DB), and actually was able to get a tone I was happy with. It seems that the issue I was having was more in the midrange, because when I brought that down, things were still natural but much more pleasant. I'll still be swapping out strings to see what my perfect set is, but I'm happier with it already.
