hey AC/DC kicks ass i would love to watch them live at times you have to face that rock music is not just music its all a lot more about the attitude and the energy once you put that part into the equation ac/dc rocks big time! \m/

I find AC/DC to be talentless musicians who sound the same in every song.
Most of the fans who have gotten angry at me for saying that say it's just 'fun' or 'party' music. That does not cut it.

I would say that is subjective for the 'great rock bands of all time'. No two people will have the same opinion.
Very true, which is why I mentioned Anthony Kiedis and Stephan Jenkins. These guys can't seem to carry a tune live. A lot of the others sing ok just fine, but their vocal character can be labeled unique to say the least.
While they can sing well as in on key, a lot of people are turned off by the drawl and vocal style. I'm not one of them, but most of my friends will think a song sounds pretty cool until the person starts singing.

Totally. I would say that a lot of American Idol singers can be bad singers in that they overuse some of the gifts that they're born with to do tacky melisma fills. Most of the American Idol singers would be terrible fits for a rock band.
Yep. Not so sure about Daltry, though. Now if you had said Townshend...
Let's add Everlast (when he tries to sing, not rap), Jimi Hendrix, Dave Mustaine (though I'm pretty sure he doesn't consider himself a singer) and Tom Kiefer of Cinderella to the list.
Someone needs to drop some knowledge on that Daughtry guy. He's wack.
I don't know all of those singers, but the ones I know on that list are at least good, some of them excellent singers, like Bruce Springsteen or Sting. Both AC/DC singers are/were also excellent, both in terms of attitude and technique (yes, technique - try singing like that for 10 sec without getting hoarse. Brian Johnson's voice have lasted for decades. That should be proof enough he has his technique under control. Edit - Pavarotti, Julie Andrews and Whitney Houston, Robert Plant, Justin Timberlake among others have all suffered from vocal fold nodules (result of bad singing technique), but Brian Johnson is not on this list on wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_fold_nodule).
On the other hand, American Idol and similar shows are full bad singers that don't have a single clue about even the basics regarding singing or music. Bad singers sing either out of tune, out of time, or without emotion or attitude.

The first performance that came to my mind when reading the thread title was this:
Coverdale ! That's one terrible performance and also one that made it to the VHS stands back in the day (I do have that tape, obviously). Thank heavens Hughes is there to save what little there is to be saved, and it's actually quite interesting how on top he is in the mix.
And a rather impressive stacks of horn-cabs he has as well

Sorry, the moment I read that line, I thought of The Beatles song.
Early in Sting's career you hear live recordings where is voice is all screechy & out of key, just terrible. Same with Daltry. Many can't stay in key.
Most American Idol singers that make it, have to be able to belt it out, with some range & must stay in key. Many of my favorite singers aren't even singers (Like Zappa, Les Claypool & Lou Reed).
Most pop diva singers that can sing in several octaves will just be a footnote in music, disposable pop, versus Ringo's Octopuses Garden or any Bob Dylan tune.
I guess that can be said for most female singers. The only one I can think of is Janis Joplin , maybe Momma Cass?
People seem to like weird or distinctive voices vs seven octive perfect pitch divas.
Maybe you should focus an "later career Sting"?!? He's a great singer. To put him in a bad singer category is just ridiculous.
Ouch, he sounds like an American Idol Reject.
How about, Dave Mustaine, or James Hettfield. Madonna, Britney...............
