Baer Amplification Megathread!

Has anybody have any idea on how a stack of 2x ML112s will compare to the Bergantino AE212 ?

I'm looking for a tight punchy lowend and punchy, clear mids and versatility, to suit more different styles of music and plaiyng, fingerstlye, slap and picking.

Any experiences or thoughts?

IME/O, a pair of 112's will always trump a single solution 212

Not even in the same world. OEM deltalite vs. Oem kappalite is not a fair fight.

More information, please...

The Baer cab is based on a variant of the wonderful Eminence 3012HO 12" neo driver. It has very good mechanical specs, and you can really push it.

Not sure what Jim's OEM Eminence drivers are, but a single ML112 will pretty much bury a single AE112 in true low end at volume.

For some reason though, the AE212 just has much more meat and 'fat' than a stack of AE112's, and I've been SO impressed with the performance of that cab when pushed. I do feel that dual ML112's would push a bit more volume, but my direct A/Bing with the AE212 and one ML112 suggests that while the tonal difference is huge, the absolute performance comparison wouldn't be as lopsided as one would think. Jim worked some magic with the AE212 IMO.

However, the dual ML112's would have more low mid punch, and a more even and bright upper mid response for sure, and IMO a bit more absolute volume capability when you are really pushing.

IMO and IME.

I'll give that comparison a go and report back.

Those with a pair of ML112s, does roger offer a reversed baffle? How are you stacking?

Unlike companies such as LDS, our cabinets are not made one at a time on a custom basis. The cabinets are made on an assembly line, in larger quantities with CNC routers. While this method helps us to keep cost reasonable and quality consistent, it doesn't allow us to just make a couple of custom cabinets with something like a reversed baffle.

I find that when stacking a pair of ML112's, the horizontal configuration will give you a little bigger low end. Stacking them vertically gets the ports up off the ground and gets the mids up higher, closer to your ears, which makes the mids sound more prominent. One nice thing about this, is that you can use this to your advantage when setting up. If you have a room that tends to suck up the low end, stack them horizontal. If your'e playing a boomy room, try stacking them vertical.

Tom and Ken (and anyone else who'd like to chime in), I'm really giving one of these some serious thought. Right now, I use my Walkabout with the Scout 12 cab or 2 GK NEO 112 II's. I love the Scout combo, but it is a little awkward and heavy for me. I just carried it upstairs to my music room after last night's gig and now have wrist pain (I have a surgically repaired neck, so it doesn't take much for me to get some pain temporarily). That being said, I think I'm going to sell the Scout 12 without the head and get the headcase for my Walkabout. I was thinking about getting a 4 ohm Scout ext cab to go with it. Then again, I'm really intrigued by this Baer 12! Any thoughts about tonal comparison between it, the Scout and the GK? Just trying to clearly understand how it would be different and if it is the right choice.

I'll leave the Scout versus GK comparison to Tom, since I'm never had them in the same room at the same time.

However, DON'T GET THE HEADCASE. You are justing adding weight (lots of weight) for no reason. Get the Mesa bag, or one of those 'mixer' type cbags that will fit that head.

I have never owned any of the Scout cabs or combos, though I've played them in different music stores and at GTG's. So, take this with a grain or two of salt, but I'm guessing that you'll have more cut and articulation, especially in the upper mids, with the Baer cabs, and the Scout cabs are going to be more warm/round. I'd be surprised if the overall output wasn't a good bit more with the ML-112 vesus the Scout 1x12, as well.

So, how would you compare it to the GK NEO 112 II?

+1 on the head case. Ortofon makes a great pack style bag that would be perfect for the Mesa. I own a pair of ML112's. The schlelp is one the easiest I have experienced. I use an Aguilar TH500. I store all of my gear in the Ortofon pack, bass in gig bag, and of course ML112. The load in is easy with one Baer. I can do both cabs in one trip, but it's a little awkward....not too heavy, just awkward. Start with one cab. I very seldom need both cabs. I to think the Baer cabs will be a step or two above the mesa cabs while being a lighter load to carry
