Baer Amplification Megathread!

Played my first gig with my new-to-me ML212, it sounded great. I used a Dingwall PJ5 and a ShuttleMax 9.2, no PA support. It was instrumental rock in the vein of Joe Satriani. Two distorted guitars, one through a Fender combo, one through a Fractal setup (REALLY saturated, lots of effects). I cut through so easily it was shocking. My sound was so defined I actually played with fingers for most of the set even though I was planning to play with a pick. My sound was thick and supportive but I could hear every nuance of my playing. Very happy! Next gig (loud and Mr. Bungle-ish) I'm hoping to drag out the Super Bassman, that should be an interesting combination.

Congrats Smeet, The ShuttleMAX is a great compliment to Roger's cabs. He puts out nice gear.
Thanks Chris, yeah, I'm loving it. At first it sounded a bit alien when I played it alone in my practice room, tilted toward the high mids instead of low mids, a little "harder" sounding than I'm used to. I got used to that, and in the band mix at volume it feels fat and defined without getting boomy. The lack of low-mid bump seems to make the lows sound deeper, and I'm still amazed at how much highs those paper cones put out and how integrated they sound.
Glad to hear your'e finding your way with that cab. I always find new gear to be a bit like dating a new person. You can't go into the new relationship with expectations based on your previous relationship. For me, the ML212 was very much like this. It's a very different cab than anything I had played before, but once I learned to dance with it properly I quickly became enamored with all the things I could make it do. It's probably still my favorite cab that we have put out so far.
Right now were are waiting on some new driver samples from Eminence. They've got a new mid diver coming out shorty we really want to try before committing to the drivers that will go in the new ML212.

Wrapped up day one of a studio weekend. Bass into an Evil Twin DI, into the Valkyrie and DI post-eq out of that. It's insane how similar the Valkyrie and Evil Twin sound - really the only difference is the high-passing of the Valk and a tiny bit more tube chunk. We're using both just because we can. 
I think the Evil Twin is running into a compressor, maybe a Fairchild? Valk is straight in. I heard three notes and was like "yup, I'm gonna go make a sandwich, we're done here."
I can't wait until the VTI hits - it's going to be The Thing.

I've never heard the Evil Twin, but it's interesting to hear the two are voiced so closely. The VTI will have even more tube harmonics on tap than the Valkyrie, so hopefully that's something the engineers will dig as well. Always great when you can set up in the studio and get a great tone up and running in just a few minutes. That's definitely what we are shooting for with the new direct box. A great "amp like" tone in a simple to use format.

So I've been gigging my ML112's for a few months and I am still enjoying them. I've found that for most gigs I can get away with just one cab which makes my life a bit easier, though the stack does look and sound better. They are absolutely fantastic for small stages, one of the places we play every month is a tavern that has been in business since 1750 and we set up in front of the fireplace.
my bandleader loves the way they sound as well, not as much absolute low end as my old cab, but still full and sits better in the mix.

Roger, I would like to publicly thank you for the very thoughtful and in depth reply to my email.
To give some background info, I purchased a Valkyrie from another TB member, and filed a transfer of ownership to Baer. While sending some emails back and forth, I asked a question about the tube circuit/eq. In response, Roger gave me detailed eq settings (that he prefers) for different volume levels to use as a frame of reference. It has been very useful.
I doubt I would get such a helpful reply from most other manufacturers for new gear, much less used gear. It really goes to show how much Roger cares about his brand.

Your'e most welcome, Will. I often think about how cool it would be to have the company grow into something much bigger than the tiny operation it is now, but I would never want the company to be so large that I was no longer able to pick up the phone and spend a few minutes talking with one of our customers. It's really one of the best parts of my job and I'm always more than happy to do so. I've always been a gear head, so getting to spend time chatting with someone talking about equipment, especially our equipment, is just fine with me.
Boo hoo, the VTI wasn't done yet so I had to make do with the Valk and ML112 again in the studio.

So, you mic with both mics more towards the mid driver? Interesting. I would think one on the woofer and one on the mid to blend. Will have to try that one
Sorry about the VTI delays. We went back to the drawing board a little bit to change some features and also the behavior of the tube drive section. Hopefully everyone will like the direction we went with it.

The picture doesn't give a good idea of where the mic placement is - they're about a foot and a half away from the cab and kind of in between the woofer and the mid. The two mics are to get different characters, not for one to grab lows and one highs.

Nice that you have an engineer willing to spend time getting the sound YOU want. Always makes me nuts to go into the studio and have the engineer spend hours and hours mic'ing the drums, hours mic'ing different guitar cabs and trying different guitars, only to hand the bassist a cable, have you hit a few notes and say, "Ok, let's try a take".
