My assumption has always been to have the coax driver as close to the top (to your ears) as possible.

My assumption has always been to have the coax driver as close to the top (to your ears) as possible.
please, someone go buy the birch 212 at g guitars in new haven. before i take out a loan.....
it's used and about 650 or so, i think 900 is about the selling price if new. Just played thru it today and it sounds a-ok. went home and played thru my two s12 deep red cabs and they sound just as good but jeez louise! FWIW, the cab looks immaculate........... aarrgh..........

Face it, IvanMike. It's too good a deal to let it go. If you do, you'll never forgive yourself. Don't walk over there. Run! You know you've got to have it.
I just finished going over my progression in this thread, and I've gone from plaintive and downcast to enthusiastic. Pretty funny! I'm nabbing a Q10XD next week, as the better part of a second rig (to a pair of S15-Ds, the better part of the first rig).
AMP BH-420 and a Trace 250SMX heads, inter-swappable modularity-ness with the constantly-variable Bag End matrix.
I will be done with rig-Gassing/shopping after the 410 is here.

Atomic Music has a deep coax 410 coming out. The shallow one weighs a ton, wonder what this one tips the scale at?
I have Tukis for my S15X-D and S10X-D. That would be my first (and most likely last
) stop for any future covers. Excellent quality covers. Very well padded and fitted, very durable, always look great and keep my cabs looking like the day I bought them.

A question: S15-D users, have you ever tried to partially close the port on back of the cab to tune-out some of the lows, like the old Trace Elliot bass cabs were marketed to do?
I'm curious, as last gig I played with a major FOH thing the bass was pretty muddy. This was probably due to the huge low-end being pumped by the sound system, and monitoring everywhere.
I wonder if I could lessen the apparent lows to just deliver more 'punch' without incurring the 'mud'?

I've never had a sound system make my S15's sound muddy. Not sure how it could. How are you eqing your bass and amp?
I had an old TE 1-15 cab... the less I say about that thing the better.
I have actually come across this problem in a few clubs that have dual 2x18 JBL subs that are coupled with the stage. Along with bass being heavy in the monitors.
Unfortunately there is very little you can do short of asking the sound guy to pull you from the monitors, dial back your bass amp EQ in hopes of finding some mix between what you here in the house and your amp. An amp stand can help in these situations as well.
When all else fails I simply turn the master on my amp to zero and deal with what the house is providing you.
What your most likely hearing is the booty shaking lows from the house reverberating through the stage and not your amp.
EDIT: This is another good reason to have an outboard DI or at least running a signal from your head pre EQ...

~ This is it- 2x18 subs, 4 of them, and 1x18s also. I know, over-the-top, but that's how they like it in the Portuguese club! I did request to have my bass pulled from monitors. Helped minimally... My amp has pre-eq DI, and I wonder if one of those Gramma pads would help?

tell the FOH to turn down your lows. I bet it was muddy with or without your amp on. If you need the amp as a stage monitor and the lows are killing you just turn down the bass on your amp. The S-15 is not a low end monster...
There's a thread here where someone talks about blocking the port in the back to do just what you are asking. He called Bag End, and they said it would be okay. The cab owner used a Nerf ball, IIRC.
It would make the cab more or less a sealed cab, correct (?), and tune out some lows and make the cab "punch" more.
I doubt the muddy lows were the fault of your S15s. I am usually trying to make mine muddier.

As far as closing the port goes, one of my S15s came to me well used and with a piece of plywood screwed over the port. Sounded muffled, small and generally crummy.

Thanks for the replies, all. Im not trying to mke the cabs sound better, just trying to compensate for a problem incurred through excessive lows fom the FOH. I'll try the Nerf bass, thanks Jasper.
