Bag End Stack in the House!

This is my "go to" setup now. If I'm bringing just one cab, it's the D10. It fits perfectly on my fold up luggage two-wheeler , and since I'm using the Shuttle, the cab being a little larger is no big deal. Loud and low. This cab is better than most 4x10s I've owned and used and takes up less space.

James, I take it you love the D12-B...It's a beautiful cab. How is the low end response on it? Can it handle a B-string (if you play 5+ strings)?

I spent the 90s with a S12 and S15 stack (with the same model head I play now).... I've often said/posted that the S12 was the best sounding cab to stick a mic on in the studio... The D12 lives up to my opinion of the S12 :bassist: (though I haven't recorded with it yet)

The low end is fine... I don't want for more, but it is shy compared to some cabs out there. It's Punchy and Tight with a vintage warmness down through the B. There is plenty of HiFi'ness to it as well, but without (to my ears) the exaggerated highs of a bullet horn / tweeter loaded cab.

I play a 6 and 7 string mainly, both with B-strings

I have a S-15LXD and S-15 LD stack, and after not really digging the tone at home, I took it on a gig, and it KILLS. It's DEFINITELY my "go to" now. Being pushed with lots of power (Carvin B1500), it sounds WONDERFUL. Deep and smooth while still cutting through the mix.

I recently bought a 1x12 from a craigslist ad, because the guy said it was "bare wood" (no photo) and I am in love with that oiled birch look. Of course, when i picked it up, it turns out by "bare wood" he meant no tolex, but it appears someone spray-painted it black (if it's factory, it's a little sloppy). I'm thinking of sanding/stripping and restaining it myself...any advice?

Good to know. I'm eventually going to get another cab because my Q10BX-D is pretty freakin' heavy to haul around and is just overkill sometimes. The D12-(B or D) probably won't be much more portable, but I love the sound of 12s. I do see a few Bag End 15s pop up on the used market and they are usually affordable ($300-400).

Look harder. My two 15s were $225 and $250. Brand new they are $420. An S15X would be a little more.

Like KPJ said: Wait for cheaper S15's. For $420 you get a brand spankin' S15-D shipped to you (in the lower 48) with the 6 year warranty.

And for the BE edumacated: Are two S12's the same as one D12? The holes on the S12 look pretty darn small, like on the D12. It's be kinda cool if two S12's were a more portable D12.

I was indeed talking about the S15X-D...and, like you said, those are a bit more. I've haven't seen a used S15X-D for less than $300. But thanks for the input. If I see an S15-D I might just grab it because $225-250 is a steal for a great cab.

If I had my preference, I'd probably go with the S15X-D, because it has a bit more high end and I'd most likely be using it by itself.

Can you post a pic? Both of mine are (apparently) factory spray-painted black, so if yours is an early-'80s or earlier it may be original.

I'll try to remember to take a picture this weekend. I was looking at it last night while discussing it with a carpenter friend of mine, and noticed that it looks like it may have been slightly textured paint that had just seriously worn down over the years...so now I'm thinking it may be factory.
