Band drama. Can I please have opinions?

I'll ignore the grammatic faux pas in his chiding statement [you're == you are] ;) ...and offer that you should say something along the lines of: "My precious time, gas, commitment, organization and punctuality are no longer available to your group. Best of luck in your endeavors."

- b

I would also agree with saying something witty and erudite like this quote, but I would probably precis it to "just ---- off"

I've talked about this multiple times with him. He doesn't get it and mocks me by saying things like "You're precious time...blah blah blah"

He MOCKS you? You mean in a friendly way? Without hearing it myself, it's hard to say how much of this behaviour I could put up with.

Did I see you say you're located in NYC? There have got to be a dozen decent, hardworking, and maybe even reliable, bands in NYC who are looking for a good bass player. Yes?

IMO, sounds like there's some kind of substance abuse or mental health problem if he's always broke yet keeping the band from progressing and making money.

Nope. No drugs and he barely drinks. Same with all of us. Mental health problem? Yep, he's been diagnosed as a douche...by me, and an a**hole by my wife. I honestly don't know a single person that likes him, outside of the band members and his GF. He's pretty much always been this way, not so much towards me until recently.

As far as singers go, they're a dime a dozen. When you watch the auditions for American Idol, the line of singers and wannabe singers goes for miles...

Not around here, at least not for original progressive metal. All the singers around here want to sing covers, none of them have any equipment whatsoever, and most of them are terrible.

It's not really in a friendly way. To an outsider it may seem that way, but it's not. It's in a "I don't respect you, and you're starting to catch on, and that ruins tings for me because you're not on my leash any more" sort of way...

Guitarist 2 is most certainly on that leash, so he somewhat sticks up for the drummer when I bring things up like this.

Yeah, there are a lot of bands around here. Most of them have different goals or music styles. Every one of them that are decent want to go on tour, and I can't do that. Work, wife, just life in general. Or they are just a little too far away, in Jersey for example.

Yea, and he probably was abused when he was a child too...and now developed destructive behaviors towards himself and the people around him because he didn't learn to channel his aggressions towards his bad uncle...

You'll love my thread that further explores the topic:Why most bands don't last

I just need to form an original band that is comprised entirely of bass players in one way shape or form. Played bass for 10-20 years then switched to guitar? Perfect!

That sounds exactly like him. I can see how it would play out if I told him he had a personality disorder. "I believe you have a cluster B, narcissistic personality disorder..."

Complete denial and more egocentric BS.

Neither of the guitarists are that great, but yeah I don;t want to leave on bad terms between anyone.

If the band you're leaving is comprised of people that are immature, and your drummer certainly sounds that way, you'll ALWAYS be leaving on bad terms even if you're leaving on great terms and giving them the honest truth as to why.

Here's an interesting situation that came to a head yesterday, and has come up more than a few times in the past with my band.

Some background: I'm the type of person who is always early and does exactly what I say. My drummer has no concept of time (not musical timing, real time). He is always late, starts practice 30 minutes late religiously, etc.
I haven't read the whole thread, and I'm sure someone has already said what I'm about to, but I'll say it anyway: This is where I stopped reading. Lack of punctuality means lack of respect for you and for the value of your time. An absolute deal-breaker.

I live in NY. The band is based in CT, 60 miles from my house going the direct way. I am lucky enough to have a flexible job and multiple offices I can work out of. I would prefer to come to Manhattan every day, but I will go to our CT office on band practice days so I can actually play. There is no way I'd make it otherwise. This office is 47 miles from my house, and the drummers house is another 25 miles from there, then back home is 60 miles.
Round trip for me, door to door: 132 miles. Cost: $20

I never find out if we're having practice or not until the day of, usually a few hours before. So I must commit to driving out of my way, possibly for nothing. We practice once a week, but it usually ends up 2-3 times a month as somebody always ends up cancelling. Usually the guitarists know well in advance when they can't make it, but the drummer is the only one that talks to all of us. We're all friends by association, I've never personally hung out with either of them outside of a band environment. He never contacts me directly either, I'm always the one that asks if we're having practice.

So yesterday, I send him a text asking if we're playing tonight. I've already driven to CT, packed up my equipment into the car, and I'm ready to play. This is 4 hours before we're supposed to get together.
Drummer: No, I don't think we're jamming tonight.
Me: Any reason why not?
Drummer: I promised someone I would give them a hand with something tonight.

Translation: I'm working on my friends car with him

Me: Is there any way cancellations can be talked about before the day of practice?
Drummer: Sorry it doesn't meet your standards, but I told you as soon as I found out my friend.
Me: A simple weekly email, text, or phone call between us is all I'm asking for, so people don't go out of their way for nothing.

Then he goes into calling me self centered for only caring about myself. It got pretty heated after that, because he's the most self centered person I know. All I want is a simple courtesy of him understanding that I don't want to waste time, money, wear and tear on my car, etc. My other bands all have emails chains about availabilities, and everyone understands that once a time is set, it's pretty much set in stone as we all have personal lives. Of course, if there is an emergency, by all means cancel practice...but this was not the case.

It came out that he made these important plans the same day as practice. Knowing that a friends of mine are coming over, and made a commitment, if I were in his shoes I would have told this friend asking for help that I was busy tonight...how about tomorrow?

Am I out of line here?

This isn't the first time, and it certainly won't be the last. I've pretty much made my decision on what I'm going to do, but I want to make sure I'm not being a total self centered jerk first.

NO WAY I'd put up with this kind of thing.

I can't say that I agree with that.

I left this band once before, no bad terms. Our original lead guitar player also left, we're all still friends with him. Singer left, still friends.

I haven't read every response, but in general it sounds like he's a self-centered doosh. Run like a rabbit - he's not your friend and you shouldn't allow yourself to be treated like that.

UPDATE. I went to "practice" last night and left the band. I got their first, so Mr. Drummer and I had a talk before everyone got there. I didn't even bother getting into all of the little things that piss me off. It wasn't worth my time.

Me: "I think everyone has different goals in this band from me..."
Drummer: "What goals are that?"
Me: "Well, gigging on a regular basis for one."
Drummer: "Gigging is a PITA, I hate lugging my drumset around."
Me: "See, different goals. I like gigging and you hate it."

Then the other guys showed up and I basically repeated everything. Both of them understood as well. Guitarist #2 did argue with me about the goals though. This was all right after the drummer and I reiterated what we just talked about by ourselves to the other guys as well, so both of them heard the drummer say how he doesn't want to gig.
Guitarist 2: "What do you think my goals are? Actually what are yours"
Me: "To gig"
Guitarist 2: "Me too"
Me: "That's not going to happen in this band"
Guitarist 2: *Look of denial on his face*

Guitarist 1 agreed with me on that as well, although I'm unsure if he wants to gig or not. he really didn't say much.

Overall, we all left on good terms. Before I was walking out the door, guitarist 2 asked me if I was still playing at his wedding. I said sure.

It sucks that NY has such a smalll music scene, I would suggest finding another band to play with. :)

It doesn't and I never said it did. I have no desire to travel into the city for a band though. Way too much hassle and expense. I don't want to lug all my stuff into the city of the train/subway/taxi/etc, and I'm not driving in on a regular basis either. I'll come in to play gigs, and I work in Manhattan so I'm here all the time, but that's enough for me.

I have another band that works regularly too, so it's not like I'm out of bands. It's a cover band, and this band was an originals band.

...He doesn't get it and mocks me by saying things like "You're precious time...blah blah blah"

Hmmm........

I'm pretty happy with my 2nd band right now and they're much closer, totally on the same page, and are all cool guys. I may find something else similar to them, as long as it can be fit in without taking away from each other.

I think you have your answer. Buh- bye!

I just read all four pages of this thread, but you had me at "60 miles from my house". Add a douchey, so-called-friend drummer, and it's time to go. You did the right thing, and handled it like a gentleman, I must say.

Thanks!

Traveling from Manhattan to Connecticut to play music is like going traveling from New Orleans to Detroit to eat jambalaya. Just sayin.

Quit.

I don't live in Manhattan, I'm in Westchester, but point well taken. It's just where we all grew up...
