I’m a bit choked and I’m not sure if I have a right to be. I’ll try and keep this brief.
I’ve been with Band A since about 2008. We’re pretty tight and have an extensive repertoire. Female singer, one guitarist, drummer and me on bass. We use my garage and my PA, my truck, mostly. We play a lot of 70’s and 80’s rock. I have a heck of a time trying to get the guitar player to play new stuff, but we do some Pink and Katy Perry. Last week I made the mistake of mentioning “All About The Bass” and the guitar player threatened to quit over it. We only play one day once a month at the same dive bar, and once every 2 – 3 months at one other nicer pub. We can’t seem to move beyond that. Band A is a MUCH better band.
Last July a female singer friend who I’d known for years called me up because her bass player died. I wasn’t going to join them, but after a couple of fill in gigs, they asked, said they’d work around my schedule and they seemed like a lot of fun. More typical classic rock. They play a weekend once a month, plus a few other event gigs. The guitar player is weak, but adequate. Singer has a few timing issues. The drummer is good, but has a few tempo and memory problems. Still, great guys.
When I told Band A I was going to do Band B, the guitar player got all bent. I believe a pretty accurate quote was “As long as we take priority. You’d have to cancel their gigs in favour of us.” I agreed, but in my mind I thought it came across as petty jealousy.
So far the scheduling has all worked out. All except for this coming January. Band B has a two nighter booked at our regular pub. $100 a night. We get a list of dates for Band A, our usual one night a month until August and one of the dates, January 31st, is conflicting.
I call the Band A guitar player (since he’s the issue) and ask if he’d mind if I asked the bar manager if I could move that date. He’s NOT happy. I told him I didn’t want to cancel, I just want to see if we could move it. He wasn’t happy about it, but didn’t say no. I sent an email to the bar simply asking if we could move that date. I didn’t cancel it or make any decisions.
I get a message from Band A guitar player this morning: “Why did you ask Rod (manager) to change the January 31st date without talking to the band?”
My exact words to Rod were ‘Is it POSSIBLE’. My response to Guitarist was “I wanted to see if it was doable first. And I talked to you yesterday before I sent the message.”
To which he replied “Well, it’s not cool man. I’m not changing dates to suit your other band.”
I replied “Sorry. I didn’t mean for it to be such a problem.”
Now I’m thinking the guy is being a jealous bitch. I’m bothered that I have to give up a better paying 2 nighter for a one nighter that pays $80 each, but, I did say I was committed to Band A. I guess I find it really troubling that the guitarist isn’t willing to bend just to make some stupid point about my commitment to Band A. I didn’t say I wanted to CANCEL, I just wanted to see if it could be moved. I didn’t make any decision, I was only trying to see if it could work! Am I wrong, here?
