Band Goals For 2022??

What are your goals as a band this coming year? We played our last show of 2021 this past weekend and have also spent some time in the studio these last couple of weeks too and we sat down and started discussing this topic. It got me thinking about the TB family so I thought I’d ask.

For us we’re really looking to find some new venues to play. We already have a couple of our regular venues that have booked us up through the summer. We have about 6 venues we cycled through pretty heavy this past year. While it’s comforting having your calendar fill up and that ‘security net’ feeling, sometimes things can get a little stale and you need to shake it up. But the pay has to be right too. So for us, yeah, some new spots around town.

That said there’s no drama in the band, we’re happy with the 3-6 gigs we play a month and the pay at all the venues so far has been great…it helps being a 3 piece! :D The floor is yours….

Finish learning the material for the new band and get the tunes tight. These aren't covers, and I don't have references for them, it's a slower process as we're writing the arrangements during rehearsals. 2 or so gigs a month starting in March. No drama thus far. Going well.

Well, I'd like to more than the two gigs the band managed to perform in 2021--it was combo of COVID and the fact that one band member de-camps to Florida for two months in the winter and another heads to Martha's Vineyard for about 10 weeks in the summer--an almost 5 month chunk of time without the full band.

I'm going to see if we can book more not-full-band gigs--maybe duos or trios--or see if I can sub with another band once in a while.

I used to record rehearsals in originals band so that I'd have reference materials for practice between rehearsals. Saved me a ton of time. I'd share them with the others; don't know if anyone else found them useful but it helped me a lot.

I play with several bands so my goals are different for each one. In a general way I've been working toward putting more rewarding things on the schedule and offloading the ones that are a pain in some way. I've largely succeeded with that; there are one or two lingering issues that will need to be put to rest in the coming year, but the stable of players I'm working with right now, by and large, is working out well for me.

The band I'm most invested in, which is a reconfigured version of a band I was with for about five years, I'd like to see moving to the next level with shows, but that's going to require a bit of work on the part of some of the members (including me). I also really want to bring in a fifth member to fill out our sound. We have a great guitarist but there is a lot more we could do with arrangements if he were not doing all the heavy chording and soloing lifting.

Ideally I'd bring a keyboard player in, but good ones are very rare. So I'm auditioning second guitarists and we'll see if we can find the right one.

I have new repertoire to learn for a band I just joined. They want me to perform a couple of my originals, so that will be fun, and will give me a reason to promote the EP I published this year.

That's about it. Most of my other goals are for personal development. Learning more theory, etc.

My band gets together maybe once every three months or so to go over new material. My BL writes alot of his own stuff so we'll go over maybe 2 of his originals and then have 2-3 covers we might rotate into the set. Once we've gone through the material once or twice I set my iphone on my amp and use the voice recorder app. Does an ok job picking everything up but definitely gives me a chance to practice the material at home too. I also share my recordings with the other guys and it seems like it has helped keep everyone on track and prevent the train wreck come gig time.

The blues band I'm in averaged three club gigs per month and a few small community festivals in 2021. Although it isn't official, we're practically the house band at one club. Our current plan is simply to increase the number of festivals. Amazingly, without practicing and off-the-cuff changes during performances, we're pretty tight and a well-liked band. So, changing the formula (or the lack of one) seems unwise.

Auditioning lead vocalists, still rehearsing, 1-2 gigs a month would be perfect.*

*If anyone in the central Ohio area knows of a tenor specializing in '70/'80 rock, who sings well outside their shower, let me know.

We're working on an EP release hopefully in February. We are hoping this will help lead to more gigs in 2022, depending on the state of the world. We also want to work on new material - originals and a few covers to diversify our set list. These seem ambitious for us - we are all part time musicians, full time parents with limited time especially around the holidays, but I think it's doable.

I have a new act that we are deliberately trying to keep extremely sparse on the gigs, like a half dozen gigs all year. We have a couple big stages and some civic gigs lined up already, but are trying to avoid bars, private events and clubs like the plague. We will see I guess.

Our band has already accomplished our plan to take over the musical universe. (OK, seriously, our goal was to find two venues, one in town and one where our female lead singer lives, and be the best dad band those venues have.)

So our goal is to learn even more complex vocal harmony songs. Also, I'm going to take on even more challenging lead vocals. I've kind of stayed in my comfort zone for a couple of years. It's time to tear into a couple of songs vocally.

We're also considering doing a few private parties this coming year. I refuse to travel for music these days. So they'll have to be close by.
