Band Leader Dilemna...

First of all a big thanks for all who have given me words of encouragement. :)

I chatted a bit with the singer today and he does not agree what has been said against me. For him, he is just tired of going thru the audition process again and again. I think we went thru about 4 or 5 drummers in the last year or so. He is going to think it over but has not decided 100% either way whether he will stay on or not. He is an excellent front man and is a huge part of why this band has been relatively successful. He "brings it" on stage and that helps motivate me to do my part behind the scenes. I think I would be alot less motivated if it was a 'blah' band. That ray of light that he may choose to stay is great news to me. The drummer for my other band (that is going into extended hiatus... leader is moving) is likely going to join us. So if everything works out we just need to find a capable, reliable guitarist. No small task, but it is what it is.

As to the old drummer he chatted with a friend of mine on Facebook, and the drummer said that he feels he exaggerated things in the email now that he looks back at it. Ultimately, I think we just had a personality conflict that we just could not get past.

Regardless of what happens with former members, there is diddly on CL that interests me in terms of bands looking for a bassist (I did a thorough search). I have resolved that I am going to give the band I started another shot. I'd still rather not lead the band, but at this point I dont see how that can be avoided. I have learned alot and will definitely think things thru before I act.

Here is a clip of the band before it all went to hell.

i agree that some of those management techniques can apply, but i wonder (too much probably) how much of it? personally i hate when someone tries to use a technique obviously learned from managers training on me. of course, if everyone felt that way they wouldn't be very good techniques i guess.

Learning management techniques doesn't make you a manager any more than learning scales makes you a bass player. But in both cases they give you techniques that can be useful if applied tastefully and with sincerity.

In this case understanding the nature of power, is why I posted. How many of those saying "It's your band, lay down the law" would quit if someone did that to them?

I agree... you have to treat people with respect. If someone constantly hung the "its my band, do what I say" cloud over me, I'd leave too.

I fully subscribe to the view that you attract more flies with honey than vinegar, and that's why I dont quite get where my old drummer was coming from. Oh well, its water under the bridge now.

right. probably most if it was done unnecessarily or heavy handed and repeatedly. probably none if it was matter of fact and in a justified situation. people are funny i think.
