I think if you don't have a lot of musical contacts (I don't) then you need to use all of the available tools to connect with other musicians and bands. Considering the amount of money we invest in gear, I don't feel like the fees charged by bandmix are a bad investment. The search function is excellent, and you can filter by distance, recent activity, availability of audio or video clips, etc. I pretty much ignore anybody who hasn't made the effort to include pictures, videos, or audio clips.
I have found singers and bands on bandmix, and they have found me. Just recently I was contacted by a solo artist who is a full time musician and wants to put together a part-time band to expand his offerings. I auditioned and was offered the job, which I accepted. There's no way I would have even gotten this opportunity without bandmix because I just don't have the networking connections (which I agree is always the best way to find a gig).
