Bands from your hometown(area)?

Central Illinois. I'm from Bloomington where I-74 crosses I-55 (old Rt. 66). About 40 miles east of Peoria (home of Richard Pryor) and 50 miles north of Champaign/Urbana, so we're responsible for:

REO Speedwagon (started at U of I in Chambana while they were all "majoring in draft evasion". Hated them, but they were local heroes so they seemed to be at every outdoor rock fest around here..

Head East- I only know them for "Never Been Any Reason" and that they played the same circuit as REO.

Dan Fogelberg- Local boy (Pekin is about 30 miles west of here) whose father was literally "The Leader of the Band". Dan's father was the band director at Pekin High School and one of the drummers I gigged with early on had been his student.

Stu Hamm- spent some time growing up in Cham-bana when is parents taught at U of I.

Adrian Belew had a band that started and practiced in Urbana too.

Some local people are also well known in certain circles. Awadigan Pratt is a concert pianist from here in town. Delmar Brown is a monster keyboard player who's toured with Sting among others. John Campbell was Mel Tormes' pianist for a LONG time.

And not well known, but a great guitarist and person- Tom Hemby who used to play with Amie Grant.

i think the guys from the illinois speed press were from that area,and bonnie bramlett was from acton,not all that far from there.....

I knew it was something like that. I dig the Raspberries and The Choir.

But I wonder what happened to the Dazz Band. Let it Whip is is one of my all-time favorite tunes...bass guitar accompianing synth bass, what a groove! I know the record was recorded in the Film Building at E.21st & Payne (Home of Norton Furniture). I think it was called Right Track back then.

hey man , thanks for the help . i forgot about wayne . i did hear or read somewhere about little big town . damon is back with alice cooper and whiskey falls may be over . not sure . speaking about the b.c. members , roman glick plays bass for jackal . then other people from bham - the guitar player from virgos played bass for creed , my old drummer nick marion (who lives in bham) played part of a tour with creed , a tour with ted nuggent , and played a while with frehleys comet . jason reed plays bass in velcro pygmies (huge cover band from the south) and im sure we can come up with more if we keep trying ....

Don't forget, when you say Brother Cane, Damon Johnson currently plays with Alice Cooper and Whiskey Falls.

Another addition to Birmingham was the band "Wayne" and some of the members of "Little Big Town" went to school here and met here.

But like I said, you nailed most of them.

I didn't really know anything about Illinois Speed Press other than Paul Cotton was from that band before he went to Poco (one of my FAVORITE bands!). Didn't know at all about Bonnie B coming from Illinois at all either, thanks!

I was thinking of some others, and there was a story goin' round about Silver Bullet, another "Blytham band*​". My understanding was that Bob Seeger hired the Silver Bullet band to back him up, and then started replacing people. Don't know if that's true or not.

Also a local radio station used to play some recordings by a Peoria band called Suburban Nine to Five. One was a cover of a Buffalo Springfield song. The band included Gary Ricrath and Dan Fogelberg.

I'd also forgotten a really important artist from the area. Luther Allison was from Peoria and I was able to see him a LOT just as I was starting to play bass. A friend of mine was a very good guitarist who jammed with Luther a lot. Luther offered Jeff a gig in his band, but the money wasn't enough to make up for the travel...

*​The Blytham Agency was a Champaign/Urbana based booking agency that handled a lot of band working around Illinois. They had a circuit of college-town bars they'd book rock bands in to and seemingly had the rare ability to give you decent bookings in a logical order instead of sending the band to Rockford then south to Springfield, then back north to Bloomington, then south again to Jacksonville. They'd try to work the band so they weren't driving back and forth. The local bar that worked with them, the Red Lion Inn, was where I saw Cheap Trick (Rockford guys, the owner of the guitar store I managed grew up with them and knew Rick from when they started playing guitar at the age of 10). There were some other bands I've wondered where they or the people in them went on to.

Groups like A Full Moon Consort who'd do covers either dead-on exactly like the record, or totally reinvent them. I heard four different versions of Joni Mitchel's "Raised On Robbery" by AFMC in a two month period, just amazing musicians.

iirc zappa wrote a song about an urbananian,urbanaite?? a mr. kenyon.....there is a great version of delaney and bonnie doing an acoustic poor elijah on youtube with clapton......joni mitchell started off in alberta and saskatchewan before moving to the east

No good band ever came out of Los Angeles! :p

Some Los Angeles musicians were technically refugees form other states/areas but they never "made it" till they got to LA. It's Hollywood!

i grew up outside of Buffalo, NY which is of course, home of Billy Sheehan -- he played at my junior high school with "talas" when i was in 9th grade.

Only others I can think of: Ani D & Rick James (now that's a pair)
