Traffic was big in the late '60's. They disbanded and in 1970 Steve Winwood was putting out a solo album that morphed into a Traffic reunion. They quit again in 1974. In 1994 they played at the Lollapalooza festival and released a new CD.

The Guess Who were big in the '60's and early '70's, then quit in '75. In the early 2000's they toured Canada, put out a live CD/DVD.
He was more about the movie acting then - Guys and Dolls, High Society, From Here to Eternity, Pal Joey, Ocean's Eleven, et. al.

No one has stated the obvious and imo the greatest comeback of all... David Bowie.

There were a few in between. I thought Black Tie White Noise was good but mostly hits and misses between 83 - 97

The Police. But more because of their reunion. Daryl Hall with "live from Daryl's house".Eric Clapton. Had some major hits after getting sober. Paul Mc Cartney. After his time with the Wings. The Eagles. The Scorpions. Phil Collins when he starting to sing. And an amazing change as drummer. No offense. You just don't see this often with drummers.

First era in the 80's starting with Number of the Beast. I saw them on the 7th Son tour '88 at a sold out stadium that held 40,000. After grunge hit they plummeted in popularity and I saw them again on the Fear tour at a crappy club in Milwaukee that only held a few thousand and was not sold out. 2nd golden age started in '00 with a Brave New World. Saw them again at a sold out stadium in Chicago. Still on top for that matter

In my opinion bands usually have one golden era. A comeback, even if succesfull, does not necessarelly mean the have a new golden era artisticly. Kiss for example, comeback for a very short time to make big bucks on their fans and then off again. More common than perhaps many would like to admit.
Better to stick to those who carry on cos they´re serious artist or to look for something new.

They were big in the 80s for a little while, until they fired their Joey Belladonna and grunge replaced metal as MTV's favourite genre.
Lately, I've been seeing more and more new Anthrax cds and records in stores, especially after their relatively new albums Worship Music and For All Kings.
Seems like they're making a comeback, and I'm happy for them.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Pink Floyd.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967 and then a bunch of weird stuff (but it is mostly pretty great too although kinda out there) and then from 1973 to 1980 with Dark Side through the Wall.
And then again in 1994 with The Division Bell.

But they didn't fade in all that time; they were at the top of the charts and constantly on the front page for nearly seven years in Britain, about six years in US.
(Which is probably why they called it quits)
I think Pink Floyd only had one "golden age": Dark Side to The Wall. Before then they were kind of obscure and after that they were Rogerless and never the same level of success. I personally love the pre-Dark Side stuff but that was before they got big.
The Bee Gees, definitely. Very popular in their early incarnation, then a significant downturn, then all the way back and then some with "Nights on Broadway" and "Saturday Night Fever" - a definite change in their sound, certainly 2 "golden ages" (at least for those who are fans). Two very distinct phases of popularity and song styles.

Agree on Paul Simon. Two completely different periods.
Tina Turner is also a good example of a true comback that became very succesful and can be regarded as a second "Era".

This is a great topic. Lots of good examples. It's already been mentioned but for me the very first band that came to mind was Yes. Actually they had more than one come back. Their initial success obviously was in the early 70's. That's the sound that still defines them today. By '77 or so they were history. Then they did Going For the One, which got good AirPlay and produced a single around ' 78 I think. After that they went silent again and didn't reemerge until 90124 which was a huge success. They band had really changed at that point with Trevor Rabin being at the forefront. I was really happy for them and loved the sound. However they couldn't make it last and once again disappears into obscurity. A few more additional attempted comebacks over the years which were subpar for me. However they remained an outstanding live band and were always worth seeing. The ultimate departure of Jon Anderson was the kiss of death and last years passing of Chris Squire was the final nail in the coffin. And so goes one of the best bands in the history of rock.
D'Angelo had 14 years between his between Black Messiah and Voodoo. I don't necessarily like Black Messiah as much as Voodoo, but he did get a Grammy for it, so I think it's fair to say it's his second Golden Age.
