Bands who got better

Coheed and Cambria was the first band that came to my head, but also because I feel on Good Apollo and NWFT they finally had the budget to get all their ideas across. The writing is just as strong on the first records.

I think they've been more of a roller coaster. Good Apollo/nwft were middle of the road albums for them IMO. Definitely not their best. The leap from SSTB to IKS was where they really started hitting the prog, not that there is anything wrong with SSTB, it's a great first album, but I felt like IKS was more what they wanted to write. apollo had some good tracks but wasn't as strong an album. Doubly so for nwft. YOTBR really brought it home.

After all these years...finally picked up Journey's 1st two albums (like, 2 days ago).
Prefer Gregg Rollie & Aynsley Dunbar & the Progressive Rock vs. the Pop/Steve Perry.
No doubt, they became a different band with Infinity.

Had to revisit. After seeing all the +1`s for the Foo Fighters, I picked up the new disc yesterday. I have not bought a Foos CD since the third one. While a great rock band, to me they just kept making the same album over and over, from what I heard of the singles. They just quit getting my attention, basically. Guilty myself of judging bands by singles. But the new disc = whoa ! They`re still the Foos, and maybe some of it has to do with me revisiting after so long, but damn ! I still think they`re pretty formulatic, but that is an excellent album. "White Limo" made me wanna start running around the house like a maniac, and "If I had Known (?)" was incredibly emotional stuff - not what I`ve come to expect from them. Thanks for tipping me off to a great CD guys ! Edit: that bass tone is SLAMMIN` !

Avenged Sevenfold. I'm very happy that the band moved toward a more melodic sound in their writing and that their song structures and lyrical writing is improving with every album. Additionally, their bassist, Johnny Christ, has improved immensely since he joined the band.

The Flaming Lips: While I don't feel they made any bad albums, Embryonic is a masterpiece and At War of the Mystics is always going to be better than the Soft Bulletin to me.

The Flaming Lips were the first band I though of. I can't think of another band who has transformed so consistently throughout their career.

Hear It Is (1986)
Oh My Gawd!!! (1987)
Telepathic Surgery (1989)
In a Priest Driven Ambulance (1990)
Hit to Death in the Future Head (1992)
Transmissions from the Satellite Heart (1993)
Clouds Taste Metallic (1995)
Zaireeka (1997)
The Soft Bulletin (1999)
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)
At War with the Mystics (2006)
Embryonic (2009)
The Dark Side of the Moon (2009)

I enjoy the first couple, but they are not of the same caliber as their later work. In A Priest Driven Ambulance started to show what they were capable of. My favorites are Transmissions... (6th), The Soft Bulletin (9th) and Embryonic (12th), but I love them all after ...Priest..., except for At War with the Mystics. Some great songs, but as an album, it just didn't work for me. I'd also put it alongside ...And Justice for all as one of the worst produced albums of all time. Way over compressed, which is probably the thing that bugs me most.

I've seen Pink Floyd listed a couple times, but Piper at the Gates of Dawn is my favorite album of theirs. Syd Barrett >>> Waters and Gilmour.
