Bands you can't stand but respect

I completely understrand why some groups like Rush and Dream Theatre have come up repeatedly on this thread, but they've at least done a few things that I consider to be awesome.

When I saw the subject of the thread, one name immediately came burning into my consciousness, a group with impressive musicianship, clever multilingual lyrics, and in-your-face attitude, of whom I borrowed or bought at least 3 albums expecting to find at least a big a vein of coolness as I found with, say, Rush, but whose performances drive me up the wall with complete consistency:

The Mars Volta.

Surprised no one's mentioned them yet.

I'm this way as well. I definitely love the ideas behind the music and they are MONSTER performers/musicians, but when it comes to actual studio recordings they just don't do it for me. However, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group. Just pure excellent music, I would kill to see them live.

I have to admire Victor Wooten's virtuosity, but I'm not a fan of his mega-new age mumbo jumbo and slightly over-insane bass riffs.

For the same reasons, I admire Les Claypool, and the rest of Primus as well. I just can't listen to their music (minus the South Park theme song and "John the Fisherman").

I also highly dislike bands like August Burns Red (generally any band that doesn't have vocals, it has screams...), but I have to give them props for being one of the few bands in their genre to be very dynamic and precise musicians, instead of an endless-breakdown-band.

If solo artists count....I hate David Bowie. I really do. Not as a person, because he seems like a cool guy, but other than "Space Oddity" and "Under Pressure" (with Queen), I can't listen to anything he's done... However, he's reinvented his sound and persona so many times that a Schizophrenic would have a hard time keeping up, and that's led to his influence being all over pop music of several decades, which is an impressive feat, even for those who despise him.

and finally, I absolutely LOATHE Kiss. I hate how much of a sexist pig Gene $immon$ is, how lowest-common-denomenator their music is (how much simpler and immature can you get than "I wanna' rock and roll all night and party every day"... although Detroit Rock City is a good song, despite my dislike...), and that they have made more money than almost any band minus the Beatles for providing some of the least fulfilling music to listen to. But, all hate aside, I have to admire their work effort to put on a good show, and their financial sense (primarily Gene's), both of which are top-level.

Now as to bands I hate with good reason: (no one said it's not allowed! :D)

The Sex Pistols - No one could play, no one could sing, it was just stupid rebellion-for-rebellion's sake crap. Probably the soundtrack to the London riots of late, too...

Almost every "___-core" band. Once you get past August Burns Red and their lot, it all starts to sound like really, really bad, unprofessional copy-catting with no musicianship whatsoever...

Boy Bands. Just kill them all. NOW. Please take out BOYZIITHEBACKSTREETBIGTIMENSYNC............in whatever jacked-up anagram conglomeration they may be in now.

Poison..Saw them live and they put on a great show, but I can't stand their ballads.

The Beatles. A few great songs (Come Together, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, etc.) but they also released alot of crap.

anything over-ly technical I can't really find enjoyable to the ear...the ammount of skill displayed is very overwhelming but I just don't find it necessary to burn through 4 different scales in a matter of seconds

and my god I can't stand the music most kids my age listen to

they listen to all these bands that blend emo and hardcore I just don't like it.

they ruined the name of hardcore punk...I only like a few hardcore punk acts like The Bad Brains and some Dead Kennedy's songs but when I ever I say hardcore my friends think I'm talking about their stupid bands.

all the songs are reppetitive, they all play the same breakdown, they drop tune to like freaking F and then they just scream

the part that pisses me off the worst is they actually have lyrics! whats the point of crafting lyrics if you can't make out any of them at all! its not like anybody can sing along and god help us if they try to!

1. Sex Pistols - They didn't care whether they could play or not, they just went up on the stage and got it all out. They basically invented punk and inspired millions. RESPECT. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that they couldn't play.

2. Dream Theatre - Skill. One of the tightest live acts. ZERO emotion in ANY of them.

3. The Doors - Just don't like them. Don't know why. Find them boring. And the whole one-man-show gets to me too. But I DO respect them.

4. Rush - I actually CAN stand Rush. I love some of their songs. And honestly their breakdowns are the best I've ever come across in songs. I just can't listen to them too much at a time. It's too overwhelming I guess.

5. Lady Gaga - Not much into her music,(I like SOME) but I have MAD respect for this woman. She does what she believes in.

6. Dylan - I actually LOVE him and have mad respect for him. Arguably the best songwriter ever.(Anther flame: I think Frusciante is a close 2nd and often 1 better) But I gotta admit, his voice is not good.

7. Ozzy Osbourne Band - I LOVE Sabbath and loved Ozzy in that band. But since then it's just been downhill. So even though I really don't care about OOB I respect it just for Ozzy.

8. Megadeth - Don't dig their sound but RESPECT. Plus Dave is just cool. :bassist:

9. Joe Satriani - The guy can surely play his ass off. Just that he does absolutely nothing for me.

10. Micheal Angelo Batio - What the hell was that?
RESPECT! But I wouldn't listen to him EXCEPT New Day.

11. Kiss - Specifically, Simmons. Don't dig him or his band AT ALL. But in spite of his crass business ventures, I give props to the man for being outright honest and very transparent in what he's doing. Although, he's the least respected in this list.

YMMV of course

I thought this was a great idea for a thread, I totally pulled it from another forum (not this website)

I read the rules, this seems to be acceptable but I do apologize if its against the talkbass rules!

Please reply to this message with any bands or acts that you cant stand but respect. Have fun:hyper:

I respect every band for having the gonads to get out there and do what they are doing, regardless if I happen to like what they are putting out or not. If you can't find something you like in something you don't, you're not gonna like much when they close the lid IMHO.
