How does 1-0 grab you. Both starters went 7 innings and both bullpens were perfect.

Dice-k had a shaky first then settled down nicely. Sabathia was making the lefties look silly and the righties weren't much better - the Sox managed to string together a few singles to account for the lone run.

I just got in from the second exhibition match of the USA vs. China. We came to play on Sunday, winning 10-0, with the game being called after the 7th. Tonight was a little closer, with the USA winning 4-1. Man, it is really great watching these young guys (mostly freshmen and sophomores in college) with no egos or attitudes play for a love of the game and the honor of their country.
Tim Hudson is looking pretty good here late in the game against the Giants. Barry's not getting anything done against the Braves! :hyper:

Yeah, now that was a great game to watch. It seems like it has been a while since I saw such a great game.

The NL Central race is still running hot! The Cubs gained a half a game earlier in the week when the Brewers dropped one on a Cubs off day. The Cubbies gained a full game last night when they trounced the Cards and the Brew Crew dropped another.

I have a running bet with a co-worker that the Cubbies will take the division. It looks like they're on more than "lucky streak" - the Cubs have been kicking butt for more than a month now, and with Lee back in the lineup, the Cubs are heading to the top!

Snell giving up Maine's first homerun was clah-ssic!

The Mets rollercoaster is still gonna give me an ulcer. From losing 5 of 7, a day off, and then win 6 of 8, lol.

Rolaids is makin' money on me this year. They just lost today's matinée to the Pirates giving up a 5 run 6th inning. :rollno:

And they release Franco?!?!?! He started at first for the Braves a week later.

Yay! Mets lost! Go BRAVES! :spit: :D

I was really surprised to see Franco starting at first. I figured he'd be delegated to a pinch-hitting role, and as locker-room support and leadership in the post -season. Saltalamacchia, though a catcher by trade, has been proving pretty proficient at first, and his bat's been on fire since he was called up. He's actually doing a good bit better in the Bigs than in AA, where I've been watching him for two years now. There's rumor of him heading out to the Rangers for Texiera, though, since McCann is an all-star catcher and Franco is at first now.

How can you be upset with the Mets releasing Franco? I have seen enough weak ground balls to second base from him. The guy cannot turn on a fastball. He should be a coach, not a player.

I'm thrilled that the Braves picked him up. Not only can Franco not pollute our team anymore on the field, he will be a liability for our competition. I hope the Braves start him for the rest of the year!

Franco's looking pretty good lately. It looks like it just took him a while to settle back into the Braves organization, but as of late he's been looking better than he has all season. Atlanta's beating up on the D'Backs pretty badly right now. So far, contrary to the Braves' habit, they've been doing all their damage with either no outs or one out.
So far no milestones today - A.Rod and Bonds both without the big fly.

Not a whole lot going on in the Majors today. The Cubbies can take first place with a win tonight.

It looks like the Braves are getting Teixeira, and sending Saltalamacchia out to Texas. I'm kinda torn with this trade. I like Teixeira, but I've watched Salty in AA for the past few years, and have been really happy to see him doing well in the big league. I guess with McCann behind the plate, though, there's not too terribly much need for Jarrod. We're getting a lefty for the bullpen, though, so hopefully that will help us out some, too.

Locally, our AA Diamondbacks affiliate, the Mobile Baybears, are dealing with an interim manager, Matt Williams. Our normal manager, Brett Butler, suffered a stroke late last week, and is still recovering in a local hospital. He's a fighter, though. He was tough during his Major-League career, and has fought-off cancer twice in the past. I was hoping to make it out to the game tonight, but the weather has been disgusting this afternoon.

Teixeira would be a good pickup. Now we'll have to figure out a way for the Red Sox to pry Saltalamachia from the Rangers. :ninja: Catcher is not an immediate need; but 'Tek is not getting any younger and Mirabelli has a MLB job because he can catch Wake's knuckler.

The radio chatter says we need a 4th outfielder and a righty in the bullpen. I think we can go until September 1 with the outfield that we have and add Jacoby Ellsbury then. If we are really desperate then call him up earlier. I agree that we could use a solid setup guy for the 7th inning. Delcarmen will be a good one someday; but I am a little nervous about him this year in that role.

Teams should be talking to us - Wily Mo Pena, Craig Hansen and maybe even Kason Gabbard are available at reasonable prices.

Franco hadn't been hitting, sure, but he is still one of the greatest pinch hitters in the history of the game, had the green light to steal on his own nod, and was a legendarily great guy to have on the bench around young players.

So they release him and pick up Ricky Be Ricky?

Playing at first or not (he can still do a pretty damn good stretch and scoop from what I've seen), purely from the bench coach stand-point I still think it was a bad move for the Mets.
