Baseball season 2007

Anyone else watching this on ESPN.

I turn it on after the Sox game on Wednesdays. I have a slight local connenction - Fran Healy (backup catcher and Reggie's only friend on the Yanks) is from my hometown (Holyoke) and he played on the same little league that I did and was the speaker at our awards night while he was still in the minors. On occasion, he and Reggie would be seen in town.

I loved the scene last night of the kangaroo court - Yogi with the mop on his head looking like a British judge :D ; also when Reggie complained to Martin about some of the grief he was taking from his teammates after the Sport article came out - Martin's response was priceless - "I'm not your babysitter" Steinbrenner even agreed.

Really? You've never seen that before? I stole home once in JV to tie a game up...back when I could run :scowl:

And sadly enough I've actually balked in a run before when I first started pitching. I walked the first two, mishandled a bunt to load the bases and then I balked :scowl: It was a rough day....but I was throwing smoke!

My bad, it was Sunday. I saw it on TV, it was a set play. The Tigers had runners on first and third. Gullien took a god lead, because the Tigers had already stolen four bases. The Seattle pitcher went to first, as soon as he made his move Sheffield stole home. I must admit sean Casey's steal was the hi-light of the day.

Fair Warning
The stars of last night's Sox game were: Drew, Lugo and Crisp (6 for 13, 4 runs, 8 RBI). The Sox have not gotten much offensive production from these three all year and still have an 8 game lead. If these guys continue to hit, watch out.

Last night played like a movie - they had a team meeting; the ump blew a home run call that cost us 2 runs and Francona got himself thrown out. The team then goes on to score 9 more runs and win 10-3.

For those expecting or hoping for a repeat of 1978 - one reason that it is not likely to happen is that Francona will not drive this team into exhaustion. If anything, he and the front office are almost too careful. They have used the lead to rest players and to offer plenty of time for injured players to get better so they shouldn't be worn out by August. The flip side of this practice is that the players seemed to be playing with a little less of a sense of urgency. I sense the urgency returning so that when they get lead back up to 12 games; there first thought will be - how do we get it to 20 rather than let's put it on cruise control.

I'm going to the Pawtucket game tomorrow - I'll be able to give a report on top pitching prospect Clay Buckholz.

Three touchdowns for the Yanks. If you start scoring 21 every game, then you will catch the Sox. Somehow, the Yankee wins are much easier to take now that the Sox seem to have found their bats: an 8 - 5 victory over the other Sox today.

As promised the scouting report from Pawtucket:
Buckholz pitched pretty well - at one point he struck out 5 in a row. He is hittable though - had one bad inning when he gave up like four straight singles in one inning to give up a few runs. From where I was sitting I couldn't get a good idea about movement or location; but he does have pretty good command of his off-speed stuff - there were a lot of called strikes and awkward swings. I hope the Sox keep him, but I don't think he will be any help this year.

I hate to say this but I wasn't that impressed with any of the Pawtucket position players. For some reason Jacoby Ellsbury didn't play today - he looked great in the few games he was up in Boston and I was bummed he wasn't in the lineup.

Cincinatti fans take note - Joey Votto, the first baseman on the Louisville Bats is the real deal. He had a couple of hits and a couple of walks and was not really tested on defense today. When he gets called to the majors whether it is this year or next - he should be there for a good long time.

I'm moving to Cincy in about a month. I'll keep an eye out for this guy.

The best news came last December when his doctors said he was cancer free. However, he (and Red Sox Nation) are happy that he is back to pitching with the big club and pitching well - 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs. The bullpen took over with 3 scoreless innings (with Delcarmen getting his first save) and the Sox banged out 14 hits and 6 runs to take their 4th in a row.

Joshua - tomorrow night's matchup might be one you would enjoy - Matsuzaka v. Sabathia. I don't see either team scoring 21 in that game.

Sometimes a team just never gets on track - it is one of those baseball unexplainables.

The hopeful sign I see is that the resigned Buehrle. What I would look for are any signs of improvement, also maybe they will be more likely to call up some promising youngsters. If a team can have a good 2nd half of the season, even if it doesn't make the playoffs, it often carries over into a strong start the next year.
