Baseball season 2007

Let me add a new flavor to this discussion.

Without looking at my location, guess the team I am talking about.

- Left fielder has 36 home runs.
- Right fielder has 29 home runs.
- Second baseman will end the year as a 30/30 man and be in the top 5 in hits in the NL.
- Their number one pitcher has 14 wins, is second in the NL in strikeouts, is in the top 10 in ERA.
- Have won 12 of their last 17.
- 4th in the NL in runs scored this year.

You wouldn't have guessed the Cincinnati Reds, would you?

Watch out. They are making a run like the '78 Yankees!

We'll have to disagree on the kid and his tactics and whether or not his status amongst the Yankee fans and teammates (especially Roger in the next locker) has improved.

I honestly don't know how else the umps could have played it - perhaps warn him after the first pitch goes sailing over Youk's head? But even I would allow that would be a little quick. When the very next pitch goes in the same exact place - you don't think it is a little late to be giving warnings?

He spends 11 innings painting corners with 99 MPH stuff and all of sudden he loses control on two pitches in a row? Doesn't make a little adjustment - maybe hold on to the ball a little longer. I can't buy that; but if you do, can I interest you in a bridge.....

Caple's column was OK - Simmons (per usual) was better -read his column about going to a game in Tampa Bay.

I'll take Caple as a warning not to become as obnoxious as non-bassist Yankee fans.

However, as far as traveling to see games - there is an easy solution. The home fans should do what the Yankee fans do - buy tickets to the games that the Sox are in town and then go themselves. This isn't rocket science. Moreover, I bet there are many hotel, bar and restaurant owners that smile when the Sox come to town (and perhaps a few owners of small market teams). I was part of the huge Red Sox crowd in Chicago as I already had to be in Milwaukee to visit my inlaws. I got tickets on StubHub for about $5 more than face value. The regular price of tickets in Chicago was the same as what the regular price of similar seats in Fenway.

Instead of worrying about whether the Red Sox manager has his uniform top on - they suspend Joba "what, what did I do?" Chamberlin for temporary wildness because Lord knows that he wasn't throwing at Youk.

The Yanks have overreached and the karmic wheel will turn against them once again. Wait, I hear it turning as I type.

I think A's arevery close to being done. 27 games left 14 games behind... Grant it 6 games vs Angels and 6 vs Seattle... Still... :(


Still fun to watch em play... Just won a game with a pretty cool 2 plays...


Still love the A's...

Just unbelievable.... Clay Buchholz. 2nd Major league Start, kid throws a no hitter. He is the first rookie in Red Sox history to do so. That game was very, very exciting to watch. I'm a little drained right now... :D

you don't think that 2 feet (left and right that is) on the infield side of the grass is out of the base line? who goes from 2nd to 3rd on the infield side? gimme a break and tell youkilis to stick it.........
FWIW, for all the years that jeter got hit by Pedro or whoever, it's about time that the Yankees stuck one in a Sox batter's ear.

I've read the things he's said. I agree with some things, and other things I don't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on how they see things. I saw the the plays in question. Youkilis was outside of the base path and the umps made the right call. However, two Chamberlin fastballs back to back thrown at the head should raises some red flags for anyone, I don't care who you are.

And yes, I'm a Red Sox fan.........whatever.....

I am still euphoric. I think the overlooked hero of the game, though, is Tek for some of the most brilliant gamecalling I've ever seen.

Everything added up. Just wow.

Yes, I am nervous. The Yankees appear to be heathly and playing well. Good for them, bad for the Sox.

I don't consider any of my posts to have been of the whining or crying variety - YMMV.

While I'll plead guilty to bashing Clemens - I don't think everyone one of posts regarding the Yanks has been of the bashing variety - again YMMV.

Since you brought up the baserunning call, in my post, I left it as "the benefit of a close call." As a matter of fact, at the point that A-Rod tried to apply the tag, Youk was on the dirt - which is in the basepaths. The rules state that you can't go more than 3 feet. The original call was that he was safe; but the umps got together and overturned it. The umps aren't perfect - I thought they had the call right the first time, you think they got it right on appeal. We both have to live with the call that was made. Of course, if A-Rod had better defensive instincts instead of his flair for the dramatic, he would have started a conventional double play by throwing to second. As it was, the play at first was pretty darn close as well.

Thank you for clearing up the mystery as to why Chamberlin threw two pitches at Youk's head. And we agree :eek: that it was intentional. You know that you are bucking the Yankee party line, right? Chamberlin and Torre and my good friend Joshua contend that it was a little wildness given his tender age and limited experience in the bigs. I contend that he has fallen under the influence of Darth Clemens and was making his bones - to shamelessly mix metaphors but you get the picture. Who knew that it was about hit batsmen going back 3, 4 or 5 years by a player no longer on the Sox???

That was the play of the game.
He also helped himself on the comebacker and on the play that he had to cover first. One thing that I noticed is that Youk seems to like to go to his right more than most first basemen - there is at least one grounder a game that Pedroia could easily catch and toss to Youk except that Youk takes it and therefore turns it into a more difficult play with the pitcher covering.

Tek did call a great game. But let's not give any further details - I'm sure that the Yankee brass has been monitoring this site and using all our insights against us. :hiding:

You also have to like Joe West's final strike three call - I admire his timing - just one extra beat. I wonder if he is bassist.

Maybe, maybe not...his innings limit for the year is supposed to be around 155, and after last night he's sitting at ~140, I believe. They know they have something special in this kid, and they don't want to fry his arm. So unless one of Beckett/Schilling/Wakefield/Matsuzaka get seriously hurt, I don't see him being a starter the rest of the way.
