Smoltz was taking his first no-hitter into the top of the eighth, but gave up a bloop to right after two called strikes. :( I was really hoping he'd pull it out, as he still seems to be one of the good guys in the game. Braves will still take the win tonight.

And on to my thoughts on today's news:
Ankiel: ehh, no biggie. He ordered a bunch of HGH. It was legal then. It was banned, and he didn't order any more.
Glaus: :eyebrow: hmm... I dunno about this one. I'll be interested to see what the investigation leads to.

On a side note, both of these guys ordered from Signature Pharmacy, the Orlando lab that got busted. Wade Wilson, a coach w/ the Dallas Cowboys, was fined and suspended for ordering HGH through them. He is a diabetic, for whom Viagra is ineffective, but HGH can yield the same results. His reasons for taking it were medicinal, and he's not a player. Should be have been fined and suspended?

Magglio Ordonez is batting above .350 this year. That's ahead of Ichiro, who was 0-4 tonight while Maggs was 2-3 with a walk.

Curtis Granderson is the best centerfielder in baseball, period. Gold glove material, and is one stolen base away from being the third player in history to get 20 doubles, 20 triples, 20 homers, and 20 stolen bases.

Justin Verlander is dominant. Bonderman is coming back around. Big Nate Robertson has posted quality outings. Kenny Rogers is back and good. Chad Durbin has been solid as a spot starter. And not to mention, the Tigers have the best bullpen in baseball (Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney, Bobby Seay, Jason Grilli, Tim Byrdak, Zach Miner, and 'ole roller coaster Jones).

The Tigers may make a run of it yet. Inge's bat has been going, Timo Perez has come through, Pudge has broken his slump ... here come the Tigers.

I wouldn't trade the Red Sox bullpen for anyone elses; but there is no question that the Tigers have a lot of talent and are still in the hunt. There are alot of teams that would prefer the Sox or Tiger bullpen to the one they have.

Granderson is an exciting player and he is having a great year at the plate. I don't see him on a daily basis like you do so I can't comment on his Gold Glove chances. However, I can tell you that he'll need to go through our guy, Coco Crisp. One spectacular play after another and actually some of the catches that he makes fairly easily; other outfielders wouldn't get close enough to dive.

First thing is to win the next two from the Mariners - a split just keeps them in the wildcard race; then go and catch the Yanks :ninja: ; then you'll pretty much need to sweep three games in Cleveland to have a shot at the division. None of this will be easy, but it is certainly possible. I'd love to see it happen - especially the part about the catching the Yanks. ;)

It wouldn't be a team that played .500 ball prior to the AllStar break in spite of having the largest payroll in the history of the game? Or would it? :D

It kills me to say it; but A-Rod has earned his money this year. Where would the Yanks be if A-Rod had put up something like his usual numbers?

Tigers appear to have lost Bonderman today to an Elbow injury that has been bothering him for most of the second half of the season. I fear that will be one to many injuries. the Tigers have not had their five man rotation or their bullpen together for any two week period this season. The good news is Granderson joined an elite group with two other players (Willie Mays was one) as one of three players ever to have 20 triples, doubles, homers, and stolen basses in a season.

I wish my timing was that good.

I was gonna ask you and Crusader the same thing. Early in the season, even as he started well, I thought $27,000,000 seemed like a pretty fair salary; maybe a little high; but certainly nothing for the Yanks to complain about. I feel the same way about Manny's 20 million - it is crazy money in the real world but market in the baseball world. I based that on the assumption that A-Rod would probably end up the year with a .320+ average; 45 HR; 120 RBI - his typical year which is nothing to sneeze at. He has exceeded those numbers already and has pretty much carried the Yankees all year. He may actually be worth more:eek: . If I read his contract right http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/new-york-yankees_111398168678860040.html If he opts out and the Yanks resign - they will be on the hook for the whole thing - so if he were to get 30 a year; to the Yanks that would be like an extra 10 mill a year rather than 3 mill since Texas which is on the hook for roughly 7 million a year for the next 3 years would be free of that obligation. I know what the Ranger fans and management are rooting for. ;)

Even with the season he is having, I don't want the Red Sox to sign him; while I am in awe of his talent, I just don't like the guy and the drama he brings to every situation he is in. But I wouldn't mind them showing enough interest to have another club break the bank for him thus limiting its ability to surround him with enough pitching to win.

My $.02 and worth exactly what you paid for it.

That is a tough break. We'll do what we can with Yanks later this week to help you out, but they have been playing good ball lately.

I was responding to your question about whether or not A-Rod might opt out. I am interested in the Yankee fan thoughts on this.

My post was mostly thinking aloud. While I think that he may actually be worth more than 27 mill at this point and it is probably in his financial interest to opt out; he may chose not to opt out and save the Yanks 7 million a year. Right now, it seems to me that he is feeling some love from the Yankee brass and faithful (correct me if I am wrong) and I think that A-Rod has gotta like the feeling. Besides, what will the extra money buy that he can't buy right now? A wise old bassist (or was it his sidekick on guitar?) once wrote "money can't buy you love."

Batting third, the second baseman, Dustin Pedroia.

Papi is getting a night off against a tough left-hander - Scott Kazmir.

Tigers pulled off a nice one tonight, down 4-1 against Roy Halliday in the ninth inning they came up with four runs to pul it out 5-4. Now 3 1/2 down from the Yankees. Unfortunately, Bondermans season looks like it's done although the good news is it a therapy (not surgery) treatable inflammation.

Clemens agent is(are?) the Hendricks brothers who also represent Andy Petitte.

Burk - good going against Halliday, not an easy guy to score runs off of.

The Sox continue a good news/bad news cycle - Schilling seems to be back 100% and he went out and pitched 6 stong innings and gives up 1 run. Kazmir and the Devil Ray bullpun shut us out.

Wake is pitching tonight and he totally owns the Rays (especially at the Trop, too bad tonight is at Fenway) we'll see if he is back to 100% after a pretty bad outing last time out.

I'd like to see Manny back in there.
