xgabriele is correct in that you don't hear it as often; but it is still around. For example, I watched a little bit of the rally and it started up there a few times. Although with much less enthusiasm than pre-2004.

One reason is that we love non-sequitor humor up here. Steven Wright the comedian is from around here. Yankees Suck when there are no Yankees around is just funny in and of itself.

I also see as a vestige of pre-2004 when there really wasn't a good (or even semi-rational) comeback for all the Sox frustration and Yankees success - so Yankees Suck works as well as anything. It is a very negative thing to say; but it came from a very real, very honestly felt negative feelings over the events that xgabriele described.

As far as the comeback for the anything Yankee-related "2004" works well for me - :D Nowadays, I think folks trot out "Yankees Suck" as some nostalgia for the bad old days when we were beautiful losers and the toast of the literary set. Or maybe ironically as in - remember the days when we sucked so bad all we could say was Yankees Suck. For me, I'm glad those days are gone, I'd don't even mind being the Mini-Evil Empire. Let the Cubs be the beautiful losers. I like going to playoffs almost every year with a realistic shot at the whole thing every once in a while. I can get used to folks hating us because we are so good. I can deal with losing a series because the other team played better rather than to a curse.

I think you are right - it is Paps. Closers are lead guitars too (or nutso drummers ala Keith Moon)

I also agree that 2nd basemen in general are akin to bassists. Catchers too.

Beckett simply owned the Angels tonight. Strike one, strike two, followed by pick one: bouncer to infield; harmless fly to outfield, strike three. All the speed in the world doesn't help if you don't get to first and Beckett had the good control tonight and wasn't going to walk anyone.

The Sox generally do well against Lackey and I thought they might score a few more than they did. He settled down and pitched a pretty gritty last few innings after the Sox scored 4 in the first 3 innings.

definitely a good game tonight :hyper: the Sox are looking like they are getting stronger with every game. I definitely wasn't expecting a crush of the LAA's ... but I'm definitely not complaining

two more games and we'll be waiting for the Indians to arrive for Game 1 of the ALCS

ho-boy, would that be an ALCS series or what. I have a lot of friends in Framingham and Hudson that would lose sleep (not in a good way) for days at just the thought of this

me - I see you have reversed the curse of the bambino with a double dose of the curse of the A-rod ... and the Sox would be headed on to the Big Series Game 1 in 5

It was a good (or at least defendable) baseball decision; but a bad playoff psychology decision. More than in the regular season, playing them one game at a time means winning them one game at a time.

I was a little surprised that Francona left Beckett in for the ninth as he seemed to be tiring a bit in the eighth and 4 runs is not insurmountable in Fenway with the wind blowing out. I figured put in Paps so he gets some work and then has a day off today so he would be good to go tomorrow if needed. But Francona understands the psychology of his team better than me - letting Beckett be "the man" lifts up the morale of the entire team. He was probably on a short leash in the ninth with Paps ready to go; but he was not to be denied and that will carry over to the whole team. It also puts a little more pressure on the Angels to win the next two games - I don't think they want to go into a game 4 down 2-1 with another Beckett-Lackey matchup.

Eric is right about Sabathia - while Beckett looked every bit the Cy Young last night, it is easy enough to make a case for Sabathia as the Cy Young. Either would be a fine choice - IMHO; and they are close enough neither should feel he was robbed. That said - if Sabathia pitches a 2 or 3 hit shutout with 10 Ks and makes everyone forget about Beckett's outing - I could live with that. :D

What happened? I walked in the house and turned on the game: 11-3 Indians. It ain't over yet (where have I heard that before) but it doesn't look good for the Boys from the Bronx.

I figured on good pitching from the Tribe; but the hitting isn't half bad either.

You haven't seen Fausto Carmona pitch often, have you? I've had the bad luck of watching him twice against Detroit. He's the same sort of pitcher as Wang, but good. Wang is overrated - look at how much run support he gets, and you'll see why he wins so many games. Fausto's ERA is 3.06 this year, with the best ground ball percentages and the most double plays. He had a few complete games, if I remember correctly. Him and Sabathia combined for about 450 innings this year, and if they had the run support that the Yankees' staff had, they'd have each won 20 or more games.

I'm not a Tribe fan by any stretch, but they have the best two starting pitchers in the ALDS by far. Yeah, Beckett is great, but the Sabathia / Carmona duo is absolutely outstanding.

Combine that with the fact that from the top to the bottom of the Indians' order, you have great hitters, hitters that come through when there are runs on base. If they are behind, they regain the lead. That's just how that team is this year. They haven't won since the 40s, and they know it. This year is their year, at least to become AL champs.

Likewise, I'm no fan of Pettitte; but he has no effect on what Carmona will do on the mound and Carmona will have no effect on him.

Carmona has nasty, nasty stuff - if he brings it the Yanks will be in for a long night. If he doesn't bring his "A" game, he could be in trouble. I didn't watch all of last night, but it looks like Sabathia found a way to win with less than his "A" game - that is the mark of a big-time pitcher. I doubt the Yanks will let another starter off the hook with less-than-best stuff.

I might go along with Cleveland having the best 1-2 combo by a bit; I would not say "by far." That said, does anyone have a better 1-2-3 than the Sox? Or for that matter 1-2-3-4? And not that it matters in post-season but 1-2-3-4-5? And if they resign Schill and Wake next year; 1-2-3-4-5-6?
I wish the Sox would have figured out this starting pitching thing 40 years ago!!!!

Note to my Yankee friends: that Lofton guy on the Indians sure looks to me to be a solid clutch hitter - why can't the Yankees get any players like that? :D
