So...you were playing a gig in Boston last night...and people were actually listening to you guys? Or was it more like background music for the game?

I'd say half the club anyway, the other half was watching the game on a big screen but still managed to applaud us as well as cheering for the game.. It was pretty tough for the band to stay on point tho.. that big screen was staring us in the face.. made for some extra long jams and outtros and a few missed cues.. to be expected when there's 5 sox fans in the band...:D

I'm sure everyone understood and is plenty excusable.

ElectrAcoustic - Great job at getting an audience and delivering a performance during a Sox WS game - that is first class professionalism.

Joshua - this was Francona's finest handling of pitchers this year and flawless execution by the pitchers. Losing the DH will help the Rockies - they pull Spilborghs while the Sox will sit either Lowell, Youk or Papi. Dice-K and Lester aren't much in the hitting department but if it gets to 5 - Beckett swings a decent bat for a pitcher.

Hawaii Islander - I actually thought those calls, while close, were correct and I think it is safe to say that the umpiring has been very good so far - I actually thought Lowell was out at third in live action but the replay showed the ump got it right with the safe call. But you reminded me how close this game was to not being so close - Papi's shot was foul by about a foot or so. And the plays that you mentioned could have led to more runs.

To all - part of the bullpen dominance (The Papajima Show is what Schilling called it) that we saw last night was set up by the plan to rest guys at the end of the regular season once it was clear that they were in the playoffs even if it meant that the Yanks might take the Division.

I really don't think Tito's resting players would have worked as good had they lost the division. By taking the division they were able to dictate their post season schedule allowing them to gain additional rest for players along with home field advantage and set the roster with added confidence.

They need to bring Schilling back. Next year's pitching contains a young staff. Curt's experience in helping coach (consul) these youngsters will be needed, moreso if Farrell leaves for a position elsewhere.

Little ignorant question here.

An essential element of Baseball (I think) is speed, right? The faster you get from 1st to 2nd base, the better, right?

Then why are some professional players I see on tele 40 pounds too heavy?

It really doesn't make sense to me.

(Apologies for being such a baseball n00b)

Its just like a bass...different kinds. And different basses do different things, right?

There are all different types of players...guys that hit for average(lots of hits, run fast type of dudes) and guys that hit for power(the heavier ones like Papi/Manny). Typically yes, the heavier ones are a little slower but you'd be surprised by how "quick" they are...b/c in the end, they're professional athletes. That's why guys like Arod get paid so much because he can hit for power, average, and he's fast. But don't think that just because a guy doesn't look overweight, he's fast. This is hardly the case.

But even the heavier ones have speed. "Bat" speed. They can swing the bat faster than other people so they get paid for that too.

Well put.
Another way to think of it is that the abillity to hit a baseball thrown by a major league pitcher is a very rare athletic ability and if it comes together with a player who also runs well that is a bonus.

Similar thing can be said about some pitchers who do not look like what you might traditionally think an athlete should look like, but if he can throw with sufficient speed and/or movement - he will have a career in basball. Not to long ago, Jim Abbott had a 10 year career and he had only one arm. He even got two hits in his career which is even more amazing.

The baseball saying you will want to memorize is "You can't steal first base."

Speed is good, it is helpful on defense especially in center field and it doesn't fall into slumps; all things being equal, you want the faster guy; but it is not essential.

Plus...that's another thing I love about baseball. Its more of a skill sport. Yes, you have to be in shape to bear the 162 game season. But to perform well in just 1 game, you can look like this:

Abbott had one hand, not one arm. His hits were still amazing, but I think he hit homers in high school.:)

One hand is more accurate. His glove rested on the stump of his forearm. The hitting is still amazing - an arm without a hand can't be that useful in a swing; but it goes along with Louieadg's point about even the chunky guys are better athletes than most; so are the one-handed ones!
