As has been said, due diligence. Check the reliability of the seller as much as you can, read reviews, be informed on their return policy and only spend an amount comfortable to you and it should be fine.

I've only bought a couple that way but both were fine.

its safer to buy higher end without playing, because generally a higer end instrument will be built better and play better. buying a cheapy sight unseen is worse, you have no idea if it plays or if it needs work.
Buying high end sight on seen would be better than buying cheap sight unseen.

I personally know of 2 people that have been doing this for years now ,they buy copies of expensive basses , for next to nothing , then sell the copies online as being the authentic whatever make of bass .

You're reporting them to Ebay or Reverb and wherever else they're active, for the fraud they're committing, right?

I can't even remember the last time I was able to play an instrument before buying it. It always seems to be the case that instruments that I want are 1000-1500 miles away from me. Luckily my acquisitions have always turned out good. If you buy high quality instruments of known manufacture the odds are in your favor.

Asking for what? A great bass? I've bought hundreds of basses sight unseen, from low end to high end and everything in between. And I'm sorry, if you can't tell a real Fodera from a fake one, then I guess you need to play more real Fodera's? I dunno. These types of threads are pointless, and just serve to scare ppl. I'm sorry you had a bad experience? Do you have any experience? Maybe that's the question.

I hear you. I am always looking for those 1968 Fender Jazz for $200 deals. And when they come up it is such a good deal that usually don't bother wasting time asking questions or playing them, I just send the money. It's those scam artists selling Alembics for $3K that you have to watch out for!

LOL, One mans "extremely expensive" is another mans Pocket change. It's funny to see Rickenbacker listed as extremely expensive. It's a working mans bass just like a Fender J or P. Foderas are going for the same or even less than Sadowskys.

I say...Work some O/T and buy whatever bass you want. But not if you've been driving around on the Donut spare for 3 months. Or you're smoking a carton a week but can't seem to put a headlight bulb in your car. Or You have every channel on your cable box and unlimited data on your I-Phone 14 but the siding is falling off of your house and you need a new roof.

Someone said "live and let live" and that's spot on. But I tend to shake my head at people with a dozen or so cheap basses. Nothing wrong with that but why not take that ~$3,000 and put it into one really nice bass?

Buyer beware. I've had great luck with two basses - one mid range and the other high end both sight-unseen. Check ratings, communicate with the seller, as mentioned due diligence is key.

I'm trying to remember the last time I bought a new bass and, except for a passle of Glarrys I bought six years ago in order to accumulate a research sample, I just can't do it. And some --SOME -- of my used basses might marginally be high-end. But mostly I buy used, usually "vintage," and I expect problems which I am fully-prepared to take on. So almost all my basses were purchased with no hands-on prologue, and whatever i get is on me. I know the risks.

I don't buy high-end automobiles, either. If the rump is so high that I cannot see my driveway over it when backing out, the car remains on the dealer lot.

In USA--- get a feel for the seller by talking to them, viewing feedback.....then decide.

Talk bass community---low risk, I've had all great results. When the results were not as expected, the TB member made it right.

Remember , you can always return it . Last week I decided to screw my promise to myself to not buy anything this year and I decided to order a Fodera or a Sadowsky . I go online and two of the Fodera basses that I wanted were sold out from Sweetwater and Sadowsky only had 7 or 8 basses in the shop and they were all over $7,500.00 . I ended up stopping by GC and ended up buying a Lakland D. Jones .......G.A.S. cured .

Out of the country gets a big yes from me.

Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Japan, England and Ireland; never had any qualms buying from there. Only attempts at scaming have been sellers in the US, one of them a store, sadly the other was a TB'er.

Not only have I bought dozens of unplayed basses, I've sent money to strangers to do the buying and shipping part
