It's a metaphor.
The bass is not really that large, nor the guitarist's that small.

It's just that playing bass requires a level of talent, and physical endurance, that not even two guitarist's can surmount!

I've read (I think in that Life book) that Keith often uses a weird open tuning with the low e string removed, so that meme may possibly be accurate.
