My my so defensive, you may know the Hendrix family but you dont know the Pastorius family, you cant go and assume they are just like the Hendrix family.

So only jazz bass players are great bassists?
I was playing jazz and classical on bass long before I heard before of a Jaco Pastorius.

+1 and exactly what I was thinking. I have met two of Jaco's sons and they are great musicians that seem to have their heads on straight and be really decent people.
Imagine having your Dad be so much in the public eye and he dies at an age where you hardly even got to know him. He's certainly one of the greatest bassists of all time (arguably THE greatest on electric bass IMHO) and the bass he recorded much of his legendary work on is back in the public domain. Wouldn't you want that piece of history, that connection to your father in your hands and NOT sold to the highest bidder?
I would. I definitely would..."Onlyclave," that's not "hero worship" its trying to hold onto a piece of your Father who has passed on.
I am sure they want the piece of history. They may not even want to sell it. But if the bass was left behind, given away, or sold, then they will just have to be the highest bidder.

One thing worth noting amongst these rants idolizing Jaco and emotionally attaching the bass to the family. 30th st. guitars is a reputable business that is hands on with most the vintage instruments coming in and out of NYC. They will probably have the upper hand, and its appropriately so. Please don't post personal stuff like this, its hurtful to both parties. Im curious to see how it plays out.
I could have sworn that Luc Haven already knew Jaco before this incident took place...
I won't say "rock" or some other style, but the only category of electric bassist living in this hemisphere or Europe not aware of Jaco must be somewhat isolated. Oh, electric bassists in most parts of Africa and Asia as well. And Australia. And bass playing scientists doing research in the polar/arctic regions.
The Bass of Doom should be ceremonally set on fire,....that's what Jaco would have probably done to it if he could see all the ******** surrounding it now...it's just another bass without Jacos hand wrapped around it's neck.

Besides, if the bass shown in BP is the one we're talking about, then in my opinion, it's not even the same bass anymore. It was thoroughly and completely wrecked and a new bass was built (albeit from some remnants of the original). The REAL BOD ceased to exist when it was destroyed. This bass is a valuable curiosity, but not a $75k treasure.
Its barely a 60's era Fender. Its had the frets yanked, what looks like a replacement body, and a destroyed neck. Any other 60's Fender would probably fetch around $800-1000 on a good day in the market. However, its a store, and haven't you ever traded in gear?

Can you? He said only rock players don't know who he is. You can be an accomplished musician without having heard Jaco. Its entirely possible and thats what I was trying to illustrate.

Just to chime in: I think you're the one who misread the comment, not GeneralElectric. There was definitely some snobbery involved in that first post.
On the subject of the bass: Who cares? It's a nice historical piece, and it should be preserved as such, regardless of who has ownership over it.
Matt is hella cool and definitely *not* an *******.
Jaco couldn't even find his shoes back in those days. Probably sold the bass for drugs or threw it in a bush in central park or who knows what.
If the bass *had* been stolen from the family I'm sure Matt would return it. Fact is, they never owned this bass, nor do they have claim to it now.
I think it would be nice if Matt gave them a small percentage of the sale price, just to be generous...

I can also say that Matt Brewster is an excellent guy to do business with (I have, both as a buyer and seller) and he has always been truly honorable in his dealings with me.

I must say, its laughable all the people in here talking about how wrong it is the guy not giving the bass back. Take your heads out of your a*s. I'd be very surprised if even one of the people in this thread, with all their do-good talk, would return it when actually put in the situation.
As Dylan Moran said, regarding the general public's outrage when celebrities are caught in hotel rooms snorting cocaine with hookers, "I'd never do cocaine in a hotel room full of hookers.....I've never been IN a hotel room full of cocaine and hookers but..."
Its easy being the good samaritan when its not $75k of YOUR potential cash.
