bass pet peeves

I did this in an orchestra I was part of in my old school. The conductor constantly moaned that the brass was to loud so I got all the brass to just not play. She said it was better but still a little loud
'wow, i've never seen a girl bass player before.'
'you play good for a girl.'
'i hate [my bass, amp], those never sound good.'
'you play any bob marley songs?'
i generally take ignorant (i.e. lack of knowledge) questions in stride, since some folks really don't know anything about bass. that's cool. so yeh, i will explain that it's not a guitar. yes, it had five strings. yes, it's the low sound you hear.

Guitarist: "Can I see your bass?"
Me: " sure "
Guitarist: " Play that part like this" ( plays exactly what he played on the guitar.)
Guitard: "why's the neck so big?"
Having worked in a guitar store we'd get guitarists, drummists and other musical enthusiasts picking up basses and doing that random slap flail thing.
Me: That was cool!
Them: Thanks, I play a little
Me: Was that Korn?
Them: Awwwwww

He's told me a few times that he's better than me on bass.

I used to sing for a band, didnt get ot play bass in it tho. anyway, the bass player would always just turn the gain up to the max and turn bass up to the max, then get rid of mid and treble completely. and he refused to turn it down even though the drummer couldnt hear anything but the bass.
My pet peeve is when the guitar player is constantly telling me to turn my 2x10 wedge style combo down while his Marshall stack takes my head off. It's like if they can hear you at all, you are too loud. I'm all about managable stage volumes anyway, but guitarists are entirely a different breed.
The following have all been uttered to me, usually by drunk college students:
"Your guitar looks really big!"
"How come I can't hear your guitar?"
"Bass? What does that do?"
For those who have a clue, they hear me play, realize I'm not half-bad and ask:
"Can you play any Primus?"
Me: "A little, but I'm more of a Rush fan"
Them: "Never heard of them."
Me: :scowl:
The above has happened at least 3 different times. How do you know who Primus is and not know who Rush is anyway? Its more of a personal thing I guess, but it keeps happening.
Well being an "older dude", I know who Rush is but have no clue who Primus is.

That was awful, all that clacking, I would be so ashamed to put something like that for the whole world to see.
Been lucky, haven't run into too many a-holes in the band/gig environment, it's at the music stores where the poseurs breed it seems.

+120,000,000 our guitar player always does this. I start playing intro to YYZ and before you know it drummers in with me too, double bass bits and everything and then guitarist comes in and BAM!! crappy shred-esque solo
That was... special.
Take a look at his "Hit Me Baby One More Time" vid and watch as he tries to keep time tapping on his acoustic.
Some of my biggest "bass pet peeves" come from bassists actually, as I'm also a producer/engineer:
The dreaded--"scoop at all frequencies but the highest clank and the lowest lows" bass tone---y'know, you actually NEED some mids in there so there's something to work with EQ--wise.
The concept that the way to get a bass to "cut through" means more high end, distortion, "grind" etc. rather than EQing it to sit in the pocket that's there for it (ya just gotta listen and find it, even with a wall of detuned guitars, it's there).
Playing a fill everytime the drummer plays one.
Not having a good tone at a low volume(goes double for guitarists
Thinking your $4000 boutique fancy hi-fi active bass with super bright roundwounds can get "any bass sound" so you only bring one bass to the studio. Sorry, it's not gonna sound like a hollowbody with flats, or a passive P-bass, or some funky shortscale thing, or whatever--and that might be what the song calls for. Even just borrow or rent a couple axes so you have some variety when it's time to record.
Bassists who think synth bass isn't valid, regardless of genre.
Fingerstyle players who poo-poo pickstyle as if it's an inferior technique, or "easy". You should be able to do both and sound good either way.
Speaking of pickstyle, my last one would be the pickstyle "technique" that basically involves strumming all the damn strings whilst playing just one note, only occasionally muting things decently(usually a pretty random occurrence) and up high towards the neck as opposed to closer to the bridge. Makes a horrendous god-awful racket that's impossible to make sound "tight" in a mix. I use the term "technique" quite lightly here . . .
