bass pet peeves

I gotta say, I never had any of the disparaging remarks about playing bass vs. playing guitar and I never get the "you'd sound better if..." or "do you know..." stuff either. I guess I'm just lucky.

My wife gave me a real treat. She hates when I practice at home - as she puts it, "it would be OK if it was actually music..."

show em this pic...

and then ask them if they look real :D :smug:

like da-ym, its a good thing im already sitting down. :D

and thanks guys, for the kind words. the point wasn't to show off my toys (well, not completely heh) but to provide an example of something that can be presented to whatever lame brain/ignorant person who doesn't give the world of bass the props it deserves.

that's not to say that i think a 4 string is less of a bass (i don't play 4's, but all my favorite bassists do) but since the ignorant usually use string count as a barometer of difficulty, my basses serve the proper purpose of confusing their world view.

This is the guy I was talking about....

He's told me a few times that he's better than me on bass.

P.S. Check out his other videos too, and notice how he makes excuses like "I was too lazy to learn it all" or "I haven't played it in a while and here's what I remember"

He must be very young, and obviously high.. because he seems not to care that he made a total ass of himself in that video. Probably walks out of restrooms trailing a long piece of toilet paper on his shoe. When he finally notices or someone points it out to him he would reply "yeah.. yeah, I meant to do that, yeah!" :rollno:

It would be nice if no one in the band would noodle inbetween songs, for that matter it would be nice if the drummer didn't noodle during the songs as well. Sometimes I think he is just playing one long drum roll instead of a beat.

used to be in a band that suffered this problem.2 guitards and a tub smasher.pure hell.we'd finish a song and the drumber would go off on a tangent at full pelt for about a minute;then the guitard player would join him.then when they'd finished the other guitard player, trying not to feel left out would do something.all at full volume.used to dread rehearsals;and now the singer and me have left.:D

two of em, especially regarding the last band I was in...

PEEVE THE FIRST: one guitar player with two tube heads, CRANKED of course, for a small bar gig. ALL THE TIME. I couldn't even hear the drummer half the time.

PEEVE THE SECOND: the rhythym player/"band leader" constantly getting whiney when I'd play more than "just the bass part" (read: the root).

Now, I'm not a virtuostic player. I'm not a slapper, a tapper, a full-blown funkified wankster. I'm more along the lines of Peter Hook, Paul Simonon etc... I thought the little bits that I added were always tastefull and complimented the song quite nicely... apparently not...

freaking ego-maniacal guitar players...

Soundman: "There's still too much bass"

Me: "That's because you've got the acoustic guitar mixed with too much low end, like I told you after the last song."

Soundman: "You still need to turn down. I already have you off on the board, and there's too much bass."

Me: "Well, it's not coming from me."

Soundman (getting frustrated): "How do you know it's not coming from you?"

Me: "Because I got tired of having this argument every week, so I didn't play at all during the last song."

Band leader: "It's true; he told me he was going to do this and I saw him turn off his amp."

Soundman: "........"

That sounds just like the soundguy near me, and i did actually do that, I went so far to unplug the kettle and jack lead as well.
