bass pet peeves

This is the guy I was talking about....

He's told me a few times that he's better than me on bass.

P.S. Check out his other videos too, and notice how he makes excuses like "I was too lazy to learn it all" or "I haven't played it in a while and here's what I remember"

Wow, did that ever take me back to a month ago when my grandson brought one of his friends over. The kids have started a band and his friend is the guitarist. The guitarist friend wanted to see my basses. I brought them out for him to see and he thinks my five string fretless is so cool. He picks up the fretless and immediately goes into what we just saw on the YouTube clip. Now, imagine what all that clacking sounded like on a low action fretless. Well, at least that's not what I like to hear comning from it. Now the real rub, they've got a new guy who just bought a beginner bass package. Guess who's going to give him lessons. Yep, the guitarist.

"P-Basses. They piss me off so much. I hate them. They have no character for me. They're terrible to play as well, and all the worst bassists i know/can think of, play them."

Are you kidding me?? I sold my jazz and several other 4 strings and kept my p bass because I love the tone...I don't consider myself professional but I am pretty good.

Wow.

Today i practiced one hour of bass. Then i listened to some Marcus Miller. That made me feel bad about my bassing. Then i found this. This made me feel DAMN good about my bassing.

I like how he refuses to admit he's bad in any sense. He'll willingly blame the webcam for his timing problems.

One of my mates quite reguarly asks me to join his band, but he doesnt want to kick out the bassist in the band already.
The reason he wants me in. Im a tight player, who can keep a good beat, whilst doing walking lines as well. Their bassist at moment doesnt have any timing but is "good" at doing walking lines and improv.
That just wouldnt work, two bassists in a band one playing it simple and well, and another going crazy.
not happening,
his reasoning "well bass just kinda sits there it would sound better, its not as important"
Its a Reggae band where the bass is everything. Idiot

The only thing I ever hated in past bands is when the keyboard player gets too heavy with the left hand.

"How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? None, the keyboard player does it with his left hand."

Thankfully, haven't had that problem in a while.

The only other thing not to like is the weight of the amp. All this technology around, and no one has invented an inflatable bass amp, yet. Sheesh.

Did you mean the South Park theme? He did do that. That was written and performed by Primus. He also did the Robot Chicken theme solo.

yeah I was quite surprised at that! then again after seeing the craziness of primus video clips I dont know if I should have been suprised haha.

weirdly enough ive had no bad or weird comments, my grandma took a bit of explaining before she got it but on the whole everyone knows what a bass is surely,...

I think the biggest peeve is the cost,... my mate had a look at the catalogue from the store where i got my bass and he started reading out the prices and saying cars were bad enough no way would he get into that,... still trying to coax him into gettin a drum kit tho ;)

You're kidding, right? Please tell me this is a joke.

Wow, that was an abortion if I've ever seen one!

I hate when piano / keyboard players play bass lines with their left hands. And then they have BAD TIME & POOR LINES. I am left with no choice but to play whole notes on the B string. This is particularly prevalent when it comes to Doors tunes.

I've been in two band situations where I was not the bassist on the recorded effort, so the bandleaders told me "just play it exactly like the CD". OK, I'll cover your overplaying non-rhythmic S___. I am my own player - if the recorded guy is good, by all means - I'll learn the part. But if he is playing out of tune on a fretless bass, Jaco-style riffs in a folk-rock tune, at an inconsistent tempo, then no - get someone else.

Musicians who cannot use a click track when recording, and then justifying if by saying they want to "express" themselves. Hmmm.

Musicians who cannot keep a steady tempo & who force me into "DJ MODE" (Driving quarter notes on the lowest string possible).

Having to play tunes from bands that I dont like, and being told that they are some of the greatest bands ever. For example, THE BEATLES. THE DOORS. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. Ugh. Gag me with a spoon. Dont make me play that crap & then question when I suggest we play "Camarillo Brillo" or "Dinah Moe Humm" or "Cosmik Debris". We settled on "My guitar wants to kill your mama".

The Guitarist sneaking into your bassy territory (bass heavy guitar EQ'ing) can be annoying too!

Just my little list of annoyances. :)

NOT just the guitarist! I'm in a band where the keyboardist insists on hammering out the bass notes when she uses the piano sound and when she's not doing that, she's muddying up the sonic space with her low-end eq strings. o_o talk about classical pianists in band.. terrible...

Fine. I take back what I said about Harris, but he still bores me.

you do realize that geddy lee used to play a p bass too, right?

i'm the first person to say that a p-bass is not for me, but to say that everyone who plays them sucks is pretty silly. some of the most influential bassists of all time played p basses.

comments like that one stick with you dude. it's like pee-ing your pants in public - ten years from now folks will whisper "he's the dude that thinks all p-bassers suck" and point.;)

:spit:One of my biggest ones would definitely be Guitards actin like Bass isn't cool cos it doesnt usually have as many strings or is a lower end and isn't at the front of a stage.

Also Guitards or normal gormless people who see my gig bag and go "ooh, you play guitar?", to which I reply, "No, I play Bass, which is a completely different thing now eff off."

Once someone had the cheek to say "*** is bass?" I nearly strangled them then and there... :spit:

People who think Bass is easier cos it usually has less strings. WRONG. It's the opposite IMO, cos its harder to get a really awesome sound out of it, but its worth it :D

Guitards who think they have the groove and can play bass. My ex-guitarist used to try and salp. It was awful. I was like, "Leave the slap-bass to the bassist, mate. Ok?" It turns out he kicked me out the next day for someone with a Ric 4001. :P

P-Basses. They piss me off so much. I hate them. They have no character for me. They're terrible to play as well, and all the worst bassists i know/can think of, play them.

E.G. local guy plays p-bass.
Mike Dirnt. P-bass.
Steve Harris. P-Bass.
Mark Hoppus. P-bass.

^ He's the dude that pees his pants in public.

Or something like that.
