bass pet peeves

that I eq and get my guitarists sound comming our of their amps.

anything goes wrong they look at me. "can you fix this?"...and most of the time its something i can tell without even getting up. like. "you put it in the output of the pedal you jackass"

i also dont like saying"what key are you in" and not getting a response, and then they get mad when i am not playing sweet licks.

In the band I'm in the bass drives the rest of the band and lays the foundation for the guitars, so I don't hear alot of the "Turn down" or "I can play better than that" stuff....

My biggest one is in Jazz band I play a Schecter Elite 5 and every time I go to state contest or some little competition thing all I get from every bass "officianado" in the other bands is that I need to get a J bass cause thats the only way to play "real" jazz, then I get "outstanding musician awards" and my band gets a 1 and they get 4's and 5's....not tryin' to say I'm great but jazz bass players need to lose the attitude and learn to play...

elitist remarks from any fanboy camp are always annoying.

equipment wise, any bass with wide string spacing turns me off. gloss finishes on any bass other than a fender J don't appeal to me at all.

dude i hope you didn't brush this chick off, she definately wanted to bang. she noticed YOU played the bass, she noticed you had one less string, and wether she know she was right or not, she came up to YOU and asked YOU about it!

We played a gig at a party once, my band made me supply the PA and bass amp for all the bands. During our first set one of my guitarists broke his A string, so he decides that for the second set he'll play bass and I can just watch. , I said "Excuse me? How about you watch because I'm the bassist and I didn't break a string without having any backups." So he gets all up in my face shoving me saying that he doesn't give a **** what I think, he's going to do it anyway. I said "Not with my gear you aren't" and I packed up the PA and bass amp right then and there. I quit the band at that moment, said goodbye to my band and friends saying I'm sick of the lifestyle. I haven't seen them since. The crust and drunk punk life is a bad one, that was my buddies 26th birthday, they are all about that age, all work as dishwashers or not at all, and have nothing to come home to other than a mattress. I said goodbye to that life less than a month ago and couldn't be happier for it. That was the last night I drank.

Speaking of pickstyle, my last one would be the pickstyle "technique" that basically involves strumming all the damn strings whilst playing just one note, only occasionally muting things decently(usually a pretty random occurrence) and up high towards the neck as opposed to closer to the bridge. Makes a horrendous god-awful racket that's impossible to make sound "tight" in a mix. I use the term "technique" quite lightly here . . .

As for bass peeves regarding non-bassists---wow, I wouldn't even know where to start . . . .

P-Basses. They piss me off so much. I hate them. They have no character for me. They're terrible to play as well, and all the worst bassists i know/can think of, play them.

E.G. local guy plays p-bass.
Mike Dirnt. P-bass.
Steve Harris. P-Bass.
Mark Hoppus. P-bass.

Gear snobbery.
Are you saying that they are rubbish because they play a rubish bass, or that they are rubbish AND they play a rubbish bass?
Either way I would like to be as rubbish as the local guy because he's as good as Steve Harris.
Threads like this are amusing often because the posters succumb - perhaps unwittingly - to the very cliches and stereotypes that they seek to confound...

People who think that playing jazz or funk means that you have reached some sort of apex, and I always get the impression then thay these people regard other styles as somehow less valid.
The fact that because I don't know what a Dorian scale is, have no formal training, and can't read music, somehow implies that I am less of a musician.
Just because you know the theory doesn't make you any good.

First and foremost: Drummers who can't keep a steady beat, overplay, or drag.

Keyboards players who play bass lines when I'm playing (unless they are intentionally doubling me which can be OK)

i hate it when i tell people i play bass
and they say
"i play guitar, it's kinda the same thing anyways... "

Well i reply to that
"you know, the electric bass is closer to an upright that a guitar"
then they ask "whats an upright"

st this point i have already hurt them
and gone into a little solo
and jam with the rest of the band
my friend actually always gives me "guff" for being a bassist
but i have nothing to say to him
cause hes a good guitarist

what also gets on my nerves is when im practising with my band
and then my guitarists friends come over
and just start playing their stuff
so i was pretty pissed at that point
