They are similar, but have more mids. Very open, and clear with bite. My favorite pickup, with Darkstars being second. Depends on the bass though. For instance, the silver JO still sounds like a J bass.

I am new to the site just today but wanted to post a pic of
a couple of my basses, not as pretty as some i have seen but
as you can tell from the wear marks i abuse them quite a bit
The alembic is my main player due to the G&L needeing a new
volume pot. If you look closley the G&L was modified.
It is sporting alembic pickups. (One of the reasons I bought it
15 years ago) There are no toggles. The pickups have individual volume controls. Both are early 80 models.
The G&L is an 83 and the Alembic is an 82.
