Thank you very much!

I actually know that much about photographic theory, but often I have a hard time to properly apply it in "the heat of the moment". The blur (limited DOF) on the first picture is intentional. I made several shots of these headstocks playing around with the zoom and focus.

However, often too dim light is the problem to not be able to have lower aperture -- because the shutter speed would need to be increased to 1 second or even more. And whatever I do: Even using a tripod and lowering the ISO setting, I still get some slight blur and too much of grain/noise.

Just a couple of days ago I did some experimenting with long shutter and the lowest possible aperture. Couldn't get rid of the unwanted grain/noise but found out that there are some spots in my lens (Canon 18-55 IS). Seems I should rather invest in a new lens than another bass...

Anyway, it's great to see many different approaches and start to understand what works and what not. I definitely have to get some black and white velvet or photographic background paper, and put together some cardbords with aluminuim foil as reflectors.
When I do long exposures on a tripod, I put the camera on a timer. Simply the act of pressing the button will cause the camera to move just a bit. Using the timer, my hands are completely off the camera when the photo is taken.

I just got a canon 28mm f/1.8 lens for my birthday (day after Christmas), and am loving the low light/shallow DOF. I need to go take some good shots of my baby...
