Bass Player’s Official Hat Problem

...I wear hats, all the time. I was raised by grandparents. So, by nurture, I'm equivalent to 20 to 30 years older than I.

Part of that raising was: "A man is not properly dressed to leave the house until he's wearing a hat and a gentleman does not wear a hat indoors".

So, even if I had hair, I'd be wearing my hat outdoors, but never at a gig (indoors). An outdoor gig might be something different, depending upon the type of gig it is (wedding/formal) and the weather.

There's another side to that. Military uniforms include hats ("covers"), and when one is on duty, one wears his cover, even inside.

When I'm playing a gig, I'm on duty.

I seem to recall that there was a rule that if you were caught keeping your hat on inside, that you had to treat every attendee to a beer in the mess.

Our hat was off our heads before we even entered the doorway, for that reason.

I spent three of my 12 years (right in the middle) as an MP. The re-adjustment was worse than the initial adjustment and I wound up getting "caught" a few times. The trouble is: I was in training, again and it cost me in "abuse" from the cadre.

That's situational, most of the time in the military you remove your cover, unless reporting (to the CO or for duty)... unless they've changed things since I got out in 92

When I'm playing a gig, I'm on duty.

And then there is another side we can explain:
The military uniform will not be worn mixed with civilian clothes.
So either you are on duty and wearing civilian clothes, as provided in the order, so no "cover" either, or you are on duty and wearing your military uniform.
(I don't know the American regulations on this, but I don't think they will differ much from ours in Europe. Here we also follow the courtesy rule no head cover inside, only for the ladies).

You guys pushed that analogy way too far. Most analogies break down if you look too closely at them.

Nobody is forcing you to wear a hat. If you don't want to wear one, don't wear one.

I started the thread/poll as a joke because so many other bassists around here wear the same hat I do.
These things just go where the universe takes them... People are funny.

I wear this exact hat daily, only in a lighter color. One older one for walking the dog and fishing and a new one for more civilized occasions.

While reading the first, I was thinking I was going to see one of the “English driving caps” or whatever they are called ??? Ya know had the snap in the front. See many wear backwards too. Now I will say that the venues I play and more hard rock / metal genre, I don’t see them.
Truthfully, I see many on TB thru the years. Hey whatever’s your thing. I’ve been known to wear a LA ball cap and sometimes a Raiders logo black ball cap, just to get some energy from the haters . All in fun right !
