After we set up I take a pic of the hat hanging on the headstock and post it to FB as a reminder of where we are playing that night. It always starts out, "Bass and hat is where it's at" My brother had a mug made with the image and my sister had a stained glass piece done.

I have a hat that I love, much like many other people who wear hats.

This hat that I love… You know who else seems to love it? Every other freaking bass player in Boston. If there’s a guy in a band wearing a hat… it’s usually the bass player and… a good portion of the time it’s this same damn hat.

So, I don’t dare wear this hat when I perform anymore because I don’t want to be labeled as one of those “bass player hat guys”. I also don’t want the other bass players in town to think that I am ripping off their style. I’m not here to incite violence. But what I’m wondering is… Has this hat completely overtaken the bass player scene in other towns as well? Is this a problem that needs to be addressed globally? Should we all be writing to our congresspersons?

I’m starting to wonder if there’s someplace where people are buying these hats and, inside the package it includes an instruction manual for playing bass… Which beckons the question… Which came first? The bass or the hat?

Thanks for your help on this. Here is a nice picture of me wearing my hat as a reward for having read to the end.

P.S. If all this post did was inspire you to buy one of these hats for yourself… Shame on you for taking advantage.

When I see anyone in a band wearing a hat I suspect there's a reason for it.

I only wear hats when it's freezing out and I'm going running or something, I'm not going to flatten my hair for nothing, never wore them except for protection against the elements..

No, I wear hats, all the time. I was raised by grandparents. So, by nurture, I'm equivalent to 20 to 30 years older than I.

Part of that raising was: "A man is not properly dressed to leave the house until he's wearing a hat and a gentleman does not wear a hat indoors".

So, even if I had hair, I'd be wearing my hat outdoors, but never at a gig (indoors). An outdoor gig might be something different, depending upon the type of gig it is (wedding/formal) and the weather.

I don't have to worry about it very much anymore either . My father rarely wore hats either until late in life then he liked those caps. I have a few of them too. I just find them uncomfortable, I've tried them onstage a few times.
