Bass Player Pet Peeves

I have another Peeve!

At a recent jam i went to, i was playing blues harp...the bass player, slapped the WHOLE song and lost the groove completely.... I went off stage for a break, another guitarist got up to play, same bass player, slapped octaves for "Sweet Home Chicago"...um, say what?

So basically players not even trying to be in the pocket. Its okay to add a bit of sizzle with a few fancy licks here and there in my opinion, but not the whole song!...my god, made me rage!

I get totally annoyed when I see the bass players pinkey stick out on his/her picking finer..

From the get go years ago, I taped mine down, now its trained that way..

I also get annoyed when someone uses a pick and has never played fingerstyle... I think a true bass player should know both..

then again, to each their own huh?

People who insist on being annoyed by those who play Higher Ground at music stores. FYI, I play the Marcus version when I am at music stores. And you can't blame a bass player for coming in and playing Higher Ground because everyone else does it. It really isn't even something you should be paying attention to.

I get annoyed when I do a bass solo, and people come up to me and say "nice guitar solo!" with the intent of complimenting. I almost feel embarrassed for them...

And I'm annoyed when I get a horrible mix and I'm inaudible. I don't play as well when I'm unhappy with my sound.

- Musicians who don't LISTEN TO MUSIC
- People who have no ear training and need to watch you play the simplest riffs in order to learn them.
- People who can't survive without tabs
- 40 year old heavy metal wannabees who stopped listening to new music 20 years ago
- Death metallers who accuse ANYTHING other than death metal of being wussie music (Conversely, some of the coolest musicians I've met are death metallers)
- People who do not learn cover songs correctly, and then rationalize by claiming to 'personalize' it or whatever. LAZY!!
- People who show up with $40,000 vehicles, and crappy gear. Uh . . . priorities?
- The guy at Mercenary Audio who poo-poo'd active basses and said he'd never record anything other than a P Bass. Go wash your flannel shirt, Mr. Indie.
- And of course . . . guitarists who know how to shred, but can't hold a rhythm to save their lives

Groupies that ignore the bass player.

People who refer to the bass as just a guitar

People refer to instruments as toys (piss of dad)

Anyone who thinks that Sid Viciouse was an awesome bassist.

Kids who can play guitar hero all day and never miss a note but don't care to play a real instrument.

big headed guitarist

big headed singers

Anyone who insist that there's a "right way" and a "wrong way" to make music

Junkies

Anyone who looks down on me because I have blue hair, piercings, and tattoos

When a bass player from another band wants to borrow your amp at the gig. Then being asked to come to the stage because he's "not getting a good sound" and discovering the GAIN and MASTER nobs are both on 10.

Had that with my Trace.

"urr, mate...your amp is a bit crap, it just keeps cutting out"

he had the EQ +10 on everything with input/master volume on full with the limit-indicator flashing like a girl at a summer festival. See what happens when you nip off for a tipple :scowl:

But on with the thread...peeves

People who keep asking:
-"why don't you play real guitar?"
-"But that bass looks exactly the same as your old one..."(peavey grind and a warwick 'vette)
-"Why get more than one instrument, you can only play one at once"

and

-Idiots on youtube who make vicious criticisms but have no actual material to support their crap or alleged know-how...especially when it's blatantly a kid who's blatantly only just started out. No he isn't Victor Wooten you obnoxious arsehat, and where's your video of impeccable musicianship?!
-Idiots who come up after show, making vicious criticisms, with no actual experience or know-how.
-Folks unwilling to try/accept anything that might tiptoe out the boundaries of what they already musically and technically know
-Sloppy timing on a live show...there really is no excuse, sit down with any number of internet-based drum machines/metronomes and play for practice.

Fender builds the Squier. Ergo, it is a Fender. Ford builds the Focus small sedan. Do you refer to it as Ford Focus, or FOCUS by Ford?

This seems like a really petty thing to pick on.

Pet peeves tend to be petty, yes?

So, should it be Squier? Squier by Fender? Fender Squier series?

I generally just call a Squier a Squier, a Fender a Fender, a Gibson is a Gibson and an Epiphone is an Epiphone...pretty straight forward.
:bassist:

This:

I am peeved that I cannot do any of what I just listened to.

You too, huh? :D

And also bassists who bust out a slap solo in a song where it has no Earthly place being there nor would it ever....

My pet peeve: People who don't know when to SHUT UP! I'm thinking mostly musically, when there comes a time that the solo should end - but it doesn't!

There are many other instances, too. Sometimes the best note is the one that isn't played.
