Pub cover band compared to a symphony orchestra?... riiiiight. I believe its ridiculous that cover bands get paid more then an original act.
buzzbass said:"Cover bands . . . seriously, getting paid to rip off other peoples music is not right or fair :scowl: "
So, by your definition everyone who's ever played in a symphony orchestra is a rip off artist. Nice. Get off your high horse. You're just bitter because we're getting paid and you're not.
buzzbass said:Believe what you want. The fact is that most people want to hear music that they know while they're out drinking. That's whycover bands get paid more. I had illusions of being an "artist" at one point too. I later realized that being a "pro" means you get paid for it. The odds against making it in an original band are so high, it's almost not worth trying. I'd rather be paid for my efforts. And, the analogy was not out of context. The same theory applies to most Jazz bands that play out as well. God Bless you in your quest, but I think someday you'll come to the same realization that I did. It's fine, I enjoy seeing the crowd having fun, that's what is most important to me. The music I play is almost secondary at this point. Question; how old are you ? Your views will change a great deal as you get older. No matter what anyone says, you're not a professional musician unless you are getting paid. I still love what I do, even though I "sold out" a long time ago.
Hmm, pet peeves? How about people who hijack threads to flame each other?i_got_a_mohawk said:Get off my high horse? i have had the chance to be in 2 (possibly 3) pub cover bands this year, and declined them, yeah, must feel great getting paid to cover song after song of another band, maybe one or 2 covers in a set, but, jeez, learn to write your own stuff, ever tried that?
To the dude about russian chicks, never met one, but, if they are anything like the czech and polish girls i've met . . . mmmm

- Drummers who spend their money on weed, and don't chip in on shipping for a P.A. amp.
- Drummers who spend their money on weed, but then bum money off of the guitarist & I for food when they get the munchies.
- Drummers who are late to practice at his own house, because he was out smoking weed.
- Drummers who can't keep a beat, because they were smoking weed, forcing me to have to keep the beat, play countermelodies to the guitar, and sing. I shouldn't have to worry about the drummer going out of time all the time.
- Drummers who play rediculous fills, then come back into the song too early or too late.
- Drummers who allow their skins to get so old, that they'll break in the middle of practice, and then don't have any spares.
- Drummer who are obsessed with Led Zeppelin and trying to be John Bonham.
- Drummers who want to cover most of the Led Zeppelin catalogue, but will never consider covering anything else from another band.
- Drummers who always want to play Moby Dick, and then take a half hour with the drum solo.
- Drummers who are in other bands which don't take care of our equipment at all, and even smash up our equipment just for ****s & giggles.
- Drummers who use a cowbell in part of a song for no reason.
- Drummers who don't dig the "telepathy" between me & the guitarist, and will shout out in between songs, "play Machine Gun next"
- Drummers who noodle around while we're trying to tune up.
- Drummers who noodle around while the guitarist & I are trying to speak to each other.
As far as other bassplayers:
All of this of course, is my opinion. If I seem to be stating something factually above, it probably wasn't, it's just my opinion.
- Bassplayers who feel the need to slap constantly.
- Bassplayers who scoop out their mids
- Bassplayers who say overdrive makes me sound like a guitar.
- Bassplayers who say you aren't a bassplayer if you aren't playing just the root.
- Bassplayers who are so obsessed with Jaco, that they're practically sodomizing his corpse.
- Jazz Basses. Can't stand the way they sound.
- Bassplayers who use just the bridge pickup (Stingrays excluded). It's annoying sounding.
- Fretless bassplayers who solo the bridge pickup to sound just like Jaco. It was his sound, and frankly, it wasn't that great sounding! Stop imitating it!
- People who say that Precision basses are muddy. Try playing one into an amp with some clarity, and they're not muddy at all.
- People who say "brand X is the best" etc, especially when X=Ampeg, and they say that I should use Ampeg as well. I don't want to sound like every other bass player out there.
- Bass solos with no accompaniment from other instruments. (My Generation excluded) It's difficult to do, and even harder to solo while still maintaining a groove, but the effort pays off. It'll also keep the audience's attention if you're playing a bass solo that the guitarist is still at least playing chords to.
- Flatwound strings. Alot of people I know swear by them, and that's fine with me. But I can't stand their lack of sustain, and the way they feel. I spend alot of time building up these callouses, and i'm not letting them goto waste!!!
- Aluminum coned speakers.
- Tweeters.
- Overdrive pedals used with tweeters.
- Most Gibson basses played with a pick. There's just not enough treble in the sound to allow the pick sound to come through!!!

I LOVE Jaco but I really hate it when people mindlessly imitate him and the most surface aspects at that.

Shearstown said:At at botb I put off last week. My band is on the stage and we're on the clock. So this Guy gets up right after we finish a song. He's a drummer for the band who HAD JUST played. First he "thanked" me for putting off the show. then proceeded to plug his own show. IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR SET. If you want to plug a show come to me and askme to and I'll do it when there is no one on stage at the moment. I think he only did it is because we had the most people up to the stage at that point and time. then his guitarist gets up on stage during the middle of a song and just stands up and talks to my guitarist. While he's playing. These guys are some new "up-and-comers" who actually got close to last at this event (It was judged not crowd response). They are a very arrogant bunch for guys who weren't all that good. Very slooppy drummer, they were tuned to C and it sounded ****ty. The drummer got on stage for another band and just stood up straght and noodded his head repatedly. These guys also had the nerve to talk about another band placing over them.
I know I would do it.Not just jumpin on the band wagon bro! Everthing you said about your drummer is true for all drummers. With exception of the weed thing. hahaThe 0x said:This is basically my drummer summed up in so many words, who we're about to kick out, as soon as we find another one.
