Bass Player Pet Peeves

People who quote posts that are larger than my screen (or have images) and only put +1

Copy jobs over 1000pages where every 2 pages are stapled together (I make copies for a living...fun stuff)

Owning 4 guitar stands....and having my guitarists using all 4 of them..... maybe I should have bought bass stands....

Detuning....kills me in the mix (my band plays in C#.....sigh)

Bands that don't swap shows

paying to park at a show

Being behind on bills and not being able to sell even 1 of 10 items

:scowl:

1. People who want to be like Jaco ALL THE TIME. It's called the groove. get into it. when a bass player solos/does a fill it should mean something.

2. People who want YOU to be like Jaco. see above.

3. Guitarists claiming that the bass FOLLOWS THEM. I prefer to say that the guitars follow us (we lay down the bass ;) and they expand on it).

4. Guitarist who drop tune so that they can play a riff with one finger. it's called talent. get some. (my guitar IS downtuned but NOT dropped: BEADF#b as opposed to BF#BEg#c#)

Here's the setup...

Someone posts a lot of pictures of their new bass. (nothing wrong with that! :smug: )

Then someone quotes all the pictures and adds... "Nice bass" at the end.

GAH! I HATE THAT! Please, just say "Nice bass" We all know which one you're talking about.

I also hate when you hold the door open for someone, not just for a second, but actually waiting until they get there, then not getting a simple "Thank you"

Not to mention when people do the "slide in."

The doors are almost closed and the person goes in the little crack, then the door slams on your face... :spit:

I get annoyed going to "jam" and people not having anything prepared. (as someone else said).

I hate it even more that most of the kids I get to play with don't know anything. I mean I'm no expert on theory, but I had to explain to a piano player what a dominant7 chord was.

+1 we tune down to C... i feel your pain

getting the final mix of a recording only to find that the bass is inaudiable (even on the parts where it's just the drums and bass) because a lead guitarist mixed it

drummers who speed up the tempo by 20+ bpm at shows

botb where you aren't allowed to play covers yet a "the killers" cover band wins first place (this happened to us this summer)

at the same botb when seeing he judges sheets being scored just as high, if not higher than the winner, except for one of them where the judge drew pictures instead of giving a score

promoters/ bookers who don't know what they are doing and don't answer simple questions after being asked repeatedly

shows being canceled last minute

shows being canceled last minute due to the white sox winning the world series (stupid bar owners  )

not having band practice in weeks

"power struggles" between band members... more so 2 founding members complaing about losing control over a band when they haven't contributed a song idea in over a year

bandmembers that would rather be with their girlfreinds

the "i forgot that i didn't know about :insert subject we're disagreeing about here: as you, my mistake" line

being called a "b***h" for wanting to leave practice at 930 because i had work at 530 the next morning, other members of the band are arguing, and nothing productive has happened in the 3 hours i was there already when we were supposed to start at 6 and didn't until 8 because other members don't know how to get there on time

guitarists blaming drummers for them being off time while the rest of the band isn't having an issue with it

being in bands where my song ideas are disregaurded because the guitarists can't write over a bassline

A guitar player who gives you a sh#t eating grin when you hit a bad note but he hits bad notes all night. Does he not know what goes around comes around?

When your volume nob is on 1 and the guitar players volume is on 10 and he tells you that you are too loud, he can't hear himself (his amp is 2 feet behind him).

When your volume is on 1 and on the pa system you are so low you can't be heard in the dance area. The reason for that ( the sound man says) is because your stage volume is too loud. I say no problem, I get paid the same weather I can be heard or not.

1. Having to stand behind the lead singer and sing the lyrics because the idiot can't remember them even though we have played the song 10,000 times

2. showing up to a jazz or theater gig with my DB and being told "we want the bass here" and finding that they have assigned me a 2 ft. X 2 ft. space and then having to beg everybody to shift around so I can squeeze in. :eyebrow:

3. Bands that have to discuss between every tune how the next tune goes for 5 minutes. Especially annoying when somebody has to play bits of the tune to remind everybody what it is. :rollno:

Shelly :)

Singers that get lost even tho the words are written down in front of him.

Keyboard player, guitar Player & bass player playing the bass line at the same time. and the lines are different.

Keyboard players that want you to play the bassline like they do so you won't clash.

You're playing the correct bassline and the Keyboard player is playing something totally different and he is louder than you.

Drummer can not find the correct beat and blames it on the bassplayer

Keyboard players who think they should be holding down the bass line, and that the bass should only play the root so that they can do whatever they like.

Keyboards, in general. 'Cause they're in the way. ;)

And lead singers who pay zero attention to anyone's tempo but the incorrect one that is in their head, and give dirty looks to everyone for not following their erratic, messed up tempo. (My ex-lead singer is so bad about this that I will not join her for any project, not even a one-nighter, unless we have a strong, dead-bang-on, drummer. Which she refuses to use. Gee, wonder why?)
