BASS PLAYERS Matter : )

We are the ones with the power to make things move. Who cares what anyone else thinks? Respect yourself!
nobody knows 2023.jpg

Most Bassists, but certainly not all of us are not thought of as an integral part of a band , we're often thought to be the dude thats "only a Bass player" , because we're not a good enough musician to be a failed or even "a terrible guitar player," and then the Bass player is often supposed to be the unseen , unheard , band member , the one who gets asked " what's the guitar players , the drummers , the singers , the soundmans , the bartenders , the guy at the door , your older or younger brothers name , and the absolute worst thing ever is the hot girl saying ' oh really ?
I didn't even know you were in the band " LOL
OF course I can only imagine the young ones, the beginners, and the other bass players that are trying to get the respect , the recognition , the Hot girl ,
BASS PLAYERS Matter !!!

I hear you brother, good post! :bassist:
Congrats on your 49 yrs and your induction!!

I kind of understand what you are saying. It took years of me faithfully playing in the band and rocking my bass parts until the other musicians really understood what I meant musically to the band and the role I was playing. I mean the drummer totally understood and we were on the same page for sure. However , the guitar divas, keyboard guys and vocalists especially didn’t really have a clue how instrumental the bass player is to the rhythm section and so I was overlooked for years when it came to decisions and opinions regarding arrangements, orchestrations and general effects. They began to get a clue when I always remembered the key signatures of not only each song but also the individual vocalist’s preferred key when they would switch lead vocals. They started giving me some respect as a musician and what’s funny is now they all lean on me. When they are anxious about something musical in the set and find themselves in times of trouble they ask me about it and speaking words of bass wisdom, we solve the problems and get back on track.

I much prefer to be "the guy at the back".
I don't want the limelight.
All that tapping slapping popping noodling doodling diddling dangling and stunt bass moves (have I missed anything?) just to pinch the spotlight from the lead guitarist is a whole load of egotistical competition I can live without.... and metal with its wimpy bass tones gives me the $#!¥$..

I'm going to be honest: that's a lot of words and I only read maybe 10, but I'll say this: I've met more "drummers" that couldn't hit the inside of a drum cage from....well.......inside it, than bad bass players. Call me biased.

No need to worry about what others think. I always come back to this, which was written by Rufus Reid and smile at knowing this little secret.

"My concept is that we as bassists should be able to play completely alone and relay the essence of a song by the construction of our bass line. We don't need the keyboard to clarify the kind of chord. We don't need the drummer to clarify your rhythm. You should be able to swing and radiate energy all alone. Obviously, when we add a good piano player and drummer, it should be an added pleasure, but not a crutch. Don't lean on anyone, it is your responsibility to play harmonically and rhythmically simultaneously"
