This one by Tommy Calwell. Tommy had an interesting technique, that's for sure! Solo begins at 4:40.

There's a moment from Blue Oyster Cult's first record in the song 'Before The Kiss A Redcap' where the bass takes the band into a different place. It's short but effective. Around 1:40

I always loved that little solo.
Totally under-rated band.

I HAVE gone through the whole thread - don't worry you're not missing much. It's mostly jazz - predominantly 80s fusion muzak, but some traditional stuff with standup bass too. Not as many funk slap wankfests as I would've thought but they're in there too. Occasionally a psychedelic freakout but not enough of them IMO. Nothing that's really blown MY socks off, personally (and given your submission, I suspect wouldn't yours either.)

I finally went through - just looked, didn't listen - some stuff that I do like, I think bass solos can work on different levels, sometimes it being harmonically interesting is important, but sometimes I prefer energy over sophistication. This is another of my favorites:

That tune is such a great vehicle to tastefully solo on. The first bass solo that came to my mind when I read the thread title was a version of "Softly..." by Sonny Rollins, with Wilbur Ware on bass. I heard it and transcribed it ~30 years ago, but haven't been able to find that version ever since!

Ah, the soundtrack of my youth! I remember loving both of those solos when I was ~13 or 14 years old. I'm sure the Camp especially knocked me out when I first heard it...tbh these days I am way more knocked out by the lovely melodic support lines that Camp played underneath all of Renaissance's tunes.

44 years after first hearing it I am still completely knocked out by the bass on this track. It's not so much a "solo" as it is playing -- and playing around with -- the melody. I did got through all the pages and listened to at least some of most of the clips.

This is my favorite. The groove, the feel, the overall tone of the song remains with just enough flourish to stand out. Very cool.

The first ~7 seconds of this one absolutely floored me the first time I heard it. It's still pretty gnarly TBH.

Not so much a solo as it is an intro, it is the epitome cool and Robbie Shakespeare. It’s so “simple”, it’s difficult. For over 40 years, when I think of Robbie, I think of this bassline.

I didn't tab it, but here's the solo at the album tempo and 90%. Ive been working on it for a few weeks and recorded a practice run of just the solo this morning. I'm going to let it bake in a bit before attempting the entire song.
