Bass Transcriptions

Any appetite for Tommy Shannon's awesome lines from "Memory Pain" - Johnny Winter, 2nd Winter ?
Tommy's bass was tuned Eb - A - D - G.
(Edit: Propably Eb - Ab - Db - Gb)
Creating tabs for a de-tuned bass is a lot of work, so I made 5-string tabs for this one.

I read an article somewhere that said he de-tuned to Eb. Maybe I misinterpreted that?

He (Tommy Shannon) was tuned Eb Ab Db Gb with SRV. Not sure about his Winter days.

I appreciate all the work everyone does to make transcriptions and tabs, but for me what would work better is a tab for a bass with all strings tuned down a half step instead of a tab for a 5 string bass.

When in a band playing SRV songs, or any songs with the guitars tuned down a half step, we will either tune our guitars down a half step or just play the song in E instead of Eb on standard tuned instruments. A tab for detuned 4 string bass works for both cases.

Love Tommy's bass lines with Johnny Winter and with SRV, and thanks for all the tabs posted here.

As far as I know, and I'm a freak for his playing, Tommy never played anything other than straight E A D G or more frequently with SRV, Eb Ab Db Gb. The great majority of the time they played tuned down a half step, just that, nothing else. Its a common blues & R&B thing going waaaay back. It gives that Eb darkness, helps the vocalist, enhances ease of string bending. Ask Jimi if you ever get the chance, LOL, most of his stuff w/ the Experience is all EB tuning. Love and appreciate your transcriptions here.

Chris, thank you for your hard work - another cool bassline.

Somehow, I cannot hear that Eb in Measure 4.
It's more like, "dirty E resolving into F (I cannot "see" that Eb), but it's just me.

It's a natural E, there are also a few natural A's that were notated as Ab. This means that the bass has standard tuning, not Eb - Ab - Db - Gb.
New notation and tab online.
Thank you @Whousedtoplay

Yeah, IIRC in Slutsky's book there's an exercise supposedly used by JJ to practice that technique, or whatever we call it. I wrote to Allan back in the day and I still have his response on official Dr. Licks stationary. Keeping that!

Keep it!
Back when I first got online, I had emails from Chuck Rainey, Alphonso Johnson, Steve Khan, & Dennis Coffey...and an irate email from someone named Batacumbele, no doubt a Carol Kaye disciple (if not CK herself).
Wish I had hard copies of those.
;)

Cool. Heh, heh, that's funny about Carol - probably was her! I know the whole deal but I still dig her, her backstory, etc.
I emailed Jerry Jemmott ( major hero, ) at his website. He responded with some kind words, encouragement.
