Bass with a whammy bar?

It's a Tiesco 6 string bass, sort of like a Fender VI.

If you have, what kind of strings did you use? I'm trying to find a set for mine. (It's only a 30" scale, but the bar and long headstock make it hard to find a set)

Looking at the bar, I can't imagine it stays in tune, but I'm hoping to get mine strung up so I can verify.

I am not sure. It came that way when I bought it, but it certainly is very secure.

That's cool. I'm going to my local hardware store today to see what kind of ideas I can come up with. Right now, my bar is either too loose or too tight, and no way to adjust it with precision.

I was hoping the bridge could cover the route from the Warwick tailpiece, but the saddles didn't have enough adjustment range to permit proper intonation, so the Kahler had to be set forward and the route where the tailpiece was got filled in and painted black. Being that it's a 6-string bridge (setup for 5-string bass), it has three springs instead of two. Holds its tuning, but is hard to push and pull! Good range of dive and it's as wide as the MM pickups. This bass means business now...

Thanks! That came to mind as well last night, but I wasn't sure if it would just leave a sticky, gooey mess, or if the tape would hold it in a good position consistently...

Tef tape is a great idea. But I had the same problem with my Hybrid. I got cocky one day and decided to keep pushing, little by little past the point of tightness until I got all the way around one more time. Now it sits right where I want it to, its tight enough and didnt harm it in any way. Take it off and put it on every day. A little GHS Graphital doesnt hurt though, or Vaseline. Dont be afraid to push it past the tight point, little by little.

Well, I actually did that last night, but that made it too tight. I went to the hardware store today and got some teflon tape, but before I use that, I also got an M7 nut and a black nylon washer. I also got a shaft collar which has a set screw, but the nut seems to be working better...

With the nut, I can set the point of where the bar starts to get tight but still sits in the right position and retains a little "swing." Looks cool too!

yes i have seen lots of footage and seen him live of les claypool using the whammy like crazy, just wrenching back and forth on it. it's hard to notice sometimes, sometimes you think he's just whacking it and has a pedal going but no, it's him whacking the strings and pulling the whammy too... he does it for the intro and noise effects before and after songs a lot i've noticed. i've always wanted a whammy...

which one is THE DEFACTO STANDARD BEST KEEPS IN TUNE PERFECT ONE? nobody has had a straight answer. i mean, which one can be purchased with a locking nut system? I had a yamaha guitar once with a locknut system floyd rose and i loved it... could just go nuts with it and it'd stay in tune... i want a bass that does the same! i have a body that needs a new neck and pickups and would make a perfect candidate. i'd like to convert it to 5 string if possible...
blah rambling while drinking is never a good idea. :p

i am considerring putting it on the for sale block. i recently picked up 5 (of 10) sweet basses i bought in a single shot sale and the wife won't let me keep them all. if you are interested in that stunning instrument PM me. The kahler holds it's tune fine. when i play that bass it rarely goes out of tune even a little bit and i use that whammy like crazy when playing that bass. don't do too many dive bombs, but use my arm to add vibrato and bend like effects. guitars need locking systems, basses...not so much (although i don't have experience with the hipshot or other trems on the market).

Ideally I'd love to find a somewhat trashed Spector ReBop to purchase to use as an "Effects Bass" - set up with a Kahler trem, Bass Sustainaic, and Link Removed "flip-flop" paint job (all of the curvature on the Spector body would be great for "setting off" the color effects of the finish). I like my eBow but it's certainly not the easiest to use with a bass' string-spacing, and the combo of the Sustainaic for cello-type clean tones and eBow-esque distorted ones, a whammy, and distortion/chorus/delay effects would be great for some solo looping pieces I've been working on.
