Basses Broken during Shipment

seriously, was considering ordering something of musician's friend, but funk that! i'll find it local, kthxvrymuch.

I have to admit that they handled it pretty well. Apologies, no hassles, and (with a little push) they agreed to send UPS over to pick it up rather than expecting me to take it to UPS myself. Cut me a fair deal on a replacement as well.

People make mistakes, it's how they fix them that matters.

UPS is STILL considering my Appeal to their Rejection...

I just got the Claims Package through e-mail. Interesting facts:
on 10/26
They delivered the package
Damage was reported
Damage inspection scheduled

10/27
Package was picked up
Reciever was unavailable for delivery

10/28
Package reported picked up
Damage reported/Damage Claim under investigation
Reciever refused delivery - Duplicate order

10/29
Returning to shipper

10/30
delivered to shipper

They even charged me for the Refused Delivery!!!

But I'm expecting 50% - 75% of the Claimed Value of $400:rollno:

i worked at Guitar Center for 3 years, and for the last year, i was in the warehouse doing a lot of shipping. Everything from PA speakers, cabs, Apple computers, and a lot of guitars and basses. Not once have we had a problem at that store throughout that year from us shipping to other stores or people (we used UPS). I would always make it a priority to pack those things damn well, cause i didnt want to end up on a thread like this! :P lol
Although once i left GC (to attend school, i loveeeeeeed GC) i bought a Hoppus bass from the used site, whoever packed it surely was lucky that it turned up in good condition, cause that packaging sucked!

I'll post mine next week...as I have a FedEx claim pending. But it appears that I'll get some sort of settlement.

Claim paid!

Bass was an MTD Grendel 5 that I purchased. Bass was insured for at least the amount I paid.

Shipped in a gigbag and packed fairly well. Something was dropped on the face of the bass, or the bass was dropped face-down, despite being marked THIS END UP, DO NOT LAY FLAT, and FRAGILE.

Damage: Moderate finish cracking around the stacked bass/treble knobs. Bass still fully-functional with no real or significant structural damage that I can tell.

Result: Shipper got a check for damages, which he then returned to me along with the bass. I got a check for about 85% the value I paid for the bass AND the bass back! Okay, so it's a bit more MOJO'd than when I bought it but it cost me little-to-nothing!

Total Time to Close: About a month. Last UPS claim I had (for a case, not an instrument) took over 9 months to close. I'll take FedEx any day!

Fedex

Ran a forklift through a cabinet I shipped.

Said the box didnt have enough padding.

Seriously, it went through 2" of bubble wrap, 3/4 inch birch cabinet, 15 inch BagEnd speaker, and out the other side of the 3/4 inch cabinet. I don't think any padding would have helped.

Buyer had to them initialize the claim, I had to file it. They stuck to the package having inadequate packaging story. I said that they sold me the insurance so they need to honor the claim. After about 8 weeks the check came. I had already given the buyer back his money. They wouldn't reimburse me for shipping because they said it was shipped even though it was damaged.

I don't use them anymore.

Just got an Acoustic 410 cab in the mail VIA fedex freight i got a sweet deal new for like 220$ shipped form musiciansfriend box shows up thrashed so the driver said lets opne the box.

Small toex tear about 1/4 inch long on the bottom corner thats it, he wrote it down and i filed a claim, may get 100$ back sounds good to me.

I had an AC30CC sent to me practically loose in a crappy flimsy box, and it was in perfect condition. Very little packing materials inside.

I was freaking mad when I saw it sitting there, but opened it up and was flabbergasted.
FedEX suggested I contact the seller and warn them to package their items a little better.

So basically the UPS insurance is a sham? It seems like even if you do get insurance its ultimately your fault for packaging it wrong in the end. Does anyone have any bad experiences with FedEX? That's how I've been shipping the basses I've sold. I haven't had any problems yet.

Yes, basically UPS insurance is a scam. When you are shipping they often won't even let you buy insurance if they deem the item too expensive or odd and when filing a claim as far as I can tell no matter what the circumstances they reject all claims unless severely pressed. And this is combined with current policy of just dumping packages in your yard with no signatures etc.

My story isn't a bass but was a conga drum. UPS delivered to my house number a couple of streets over. Just dumped it on a porch where it proceeded to disappear. So I file a claim with UPS and got nothing but denials. So I called where I ordered the drum (I think it was Musician's Friend) and the guy there looked it up and unlike the people at UPS actually had access to UPS data and then informed me that UPS' OWN RECORDS showed that they dumped it on the wrong street. But MF was totally cool and said don't worry they'll ship another (they did) and they'll deal with UPS and the claim (they did).

The lesson, however, was not lost on me. Even if you have PROOF that UPS caused the problem, they will stonewall and deny it all. The only way any claims get paid is if a major UPS customer such as MF demands it. For you and me trying to get a claim paid is like getting blood from a turnip. You could have video of the UPS driver running the truck right over the box and they'd still deny any responsibility right to your face.

Feh.

This thread is making me nervous, I got a sadowsky coming my way shipped via USPS to APO.
But, So far (IMO) USPS is the cheapest and best delivery, and usps is the only shipping company that actually care for the troops here (they ship to APO, others don't care).

WOW! After initially REJECTING this claim because there was no damage to the box, UPS ponies up $409.xx!!!
