Thanks for this. Made my day.

I just started dealing with FedEx damaging a MINT Spector Euro w/ exotic Zebrawood top. I've probably had almost 30 basses go back and forth without the slightest scratch (and I've seem some weak packing jobs), but this one now has a finish that looks like it's shattered around the knobs. Seems one of the knobs was bent/pushed back into the body until the poly cracked. Makes me so mad I could puke!

All 6 basses and 4 guitars I own have all been shipped to me. With the basses, they've always been in OHSC.

Only problem I've had is my Bongo 5 came with the volume knob bent. However, I believe that was because EBMM wasn't using a case yet that held the Bongo body firm so it was allowed to slide around in the case. EBMM promptly sent me a replacement pot free of charge.

Guess I've been extremely lucky. Somehow I'd rather have a new bass shipped to me than one that's sat in a show room for a while being handled by amateur after amateur.

FedEx did the same thing to a Fender Cowpoke I bought here from another TB'er. Shipped in a padded gig bag, surrounded by an OE bass box, peanuts, bubble wrap, the whole shot. IMO the bass was very carefully & expertly packed. Cowpoke got to me with the tone/volume pots pushed right through the front of the bass, breaking the surrounding wood in the process. Obviously they piled something very heavy on top of the bass, to cause that sort of damage.

Seller filed a claim, FedEx picked up the bass & packaging from me. They initially denied the claim, calling it "improper packaging". :spit: Seller knew someone @ FedEx & got the claim approved. I subsequently bought another Cowpoke, shipped in a HSC, which arrived intact.

Moral of the story: FedEx are no group of saints, either...:rollno:

So, an interesting end to what was a cautionary tale:

The buyer and I were able to get together the required documentation for FedEx's claim process. At that point, they were supposed to send out an adjuster to check out the packaging and bass, but, because the cost of the repair was less that $1000, they just mailed out a check for the damages. It was very hassle-free. Worth noting is that the buyer is way out in Washington State, so that may have affected FedEx's decision regarding the adjuster.

No pics, but back in '85 I traveled with my '68 SG Custom

A) Shipped By: Eastern Airlines (I'm pretty sure it was Eastern, could have been American)

B) Shipped in: Hard case with straps around the outside, tuned down a few steps

C) Damage: Pete Townshend couldn't have done more damage, the case was spotless so I assume it was removed, smashed, and stuffed back in the case

D) Insurance Ammount: $1000

E) Result of Claim: Airline refused to honor the insurance. I was charged to insure it for a grand, but the fine print indicated that musical instruments were not covered, so I got taken twice.

F) Pictures!!! Not a bass and I don't have any after pics. I still have the original white pickguard in a box somewhere I think, it's ratty as hell.

I'm not happy.......

While I was working at a music shop we were selling old stock online. There was a Fender Mike Dirnt P Bass sitting in the shop for a while, and I got the greenlight to ebay it. It was there for so long I thought about buying just to get it out of the store haha. I felt bad for it. After it sold we packed the heck out of it. Double-boxed, padded, and the whole nine yards. It was then sealed with brown box tape.

A few days later this particular bass disappeared from UPS somewhere in Texas. All the found was the outer box. Mangled beyond belief. We gave the buyer his cash back, and filed a claim with UPS. They just paid us. No questions asked. THis package just fell off of the grid.

About a week later. I walk into work and see a dinged and scraped up Dirnt bass leaning behind the counter. I laughed and made a joke about not being able to get rid of that one since it was so beat up. I asked if it came in on trade. It didn't. They said FedEx dropped it off.

What happened was when we shipped it. We reused the interior box from another bass that head come in. That box had a FedEx label with the shop's address on it. When the exterior box was destroyed The interior box came out. UPS thought they had FedEx's box, so they handed it of them. That poor bass got knocked around all the way back up here. The inner box wasn't packed as well as the outer. It was missing paint everywhere, and the box was darn near destroyed when it made it back. The bass was parted out for since the body was thrashed.

I lied. I just bought a Squier Katana bass online...I hope it comes intact and undamaged... I bought it online because the odds of me seeing one in my local guitar center are slim. Plus, it was only $299. BUUT, I'm buying the rest of my gear locally. Or I'll drive to the seller's house. I don't care if it is across the country. I'll make a road trip out of it.

GC sent me a used Lakland 55-02 once that they "packed" in a big box with a half of dozen of those softball sized, blow-up pillows that were floating around in the box along with unprotected bass.

I was horrified when I got the box and felt the bass moving freely around in the interior of the box. Took the bass out and the whole control cavity of the bass was almost completely snapped off.

No fault of UPS. This was a poor (or should I say PISS POOR) packing job by GC!
