A bit more progress today. . . figured I'd try to get Mooselump's bass finished out and ready to send back.
First a bit of fret dressing to get the PLEK tool marks out. . . this is really light really. You can barely feel the marks left from the cutter wheel. Because it's what I have on hand, I use 320 (left-over from the fret leveling bar), 600, 1000 grit papers and then polish with a felt wheel on a dremel with some compound.
I tape off every other fret, dress up 1/2 the frets, and then move all of the tape. That way, I use 50% less tape and also am able to utilize both straight edges of the tape. I also don't have to cut any tape when I get to the higher frets where it gets too wide for a single piece. I'm sure there are a bazillion methods that work for this. I'm told I should try the 3M sanding pads. Mike, who was the PLEK operator, uses 400, 800, 1000, 2000, and then 0000 steel wool and uses a metal guard instead of taping. He even gave me a guard so I could give it a go. I tried that and found for me, taping worked better/faster.
I probably should have just PLEK'd this nut, but I just plum forgot when I was over at the shop. Plus, I've gotta pay off my fret files somehow

First, I removed the existing one.. . I used my fret cutters and rocked it for a long time with little motions side to side until I heard the glue crack. Then, I slowly worked it out of the slot. I remember how a fretboard can really get jacked up if you force these things out. If there was any more resistance, I would have used the dremel and cut the nut down the middle and then squeezed on the outside to collapse the nut.
The nut slot needed a bit of cleaning out with a chisel and a razor blade. . . mostly to remove glue and a few chunks of the old nut.
New nut is sanded down to width slowly so I get a nice fit. Because I had such a hard time getting the nut out on a previous bass, I've decided to just fit them well and not use any glue at all. If in the future someone wants to glue it down, that's fine. . . a tiny drop of crazy glue or titebond on the bottom will be all that's needed. The material I'm using is TUSQ Graphtech. . . basically some sort of graphite infused plastic material. The stuff seems to have eaten up my Norman nut files pretty quickly (1 nut), so I figure it's got some favorable characteristics. I haven't done any hard-core tests on alternate materials, but I also haven't had reason to switch. I like how these nuts smooth out the tuning do to the friction reducing properties of the material.
String spacing looks good. . . I transferred the spacing from an old SX nut on this one because I liked the way it laid out just fine. Plus, PLEK optimizes for the string paths, leaving the string spacing alone would maximize the fret level.

And then, I went too far on the D string. . . crap. .. i guess it was bound to happen at some point. It wasn't particularly ruined as I still had a little space. I probably could have stuffed a piece of copper foil or something thin under the nut and it would have been fine, but not this time on a customer bass. . . so, back to step 1. What a pain. . . REALLY should have let the robot do this.
2nd time works fine. I made an adjustment and flattened the G side of the nut a bit since my slots were running a little deep. I probably could have thinned it some more, but I like my strings completely buried in the nut because I've had the bass fall on it's face before and the nut shear off at the string which is no fun. This way, if the bass falls, hopefully, the strings won't be driven into the nut, and it will not break.
JLS came over the other day to take a look at some of the PLEK'd basses to evaluate the robot's performance. He left a Carvin R600 head at my place so that I could have something to test on for now. I took another look at the bass to make sure everything is in order. . . tweaked on the pickup heights a bit, raised the strings from ridiculous low to reasonably ridiculous low . . . that being ~.075" G string ~.085" E string. This bass is running really well now. It was missing a bunch of pickguard screws when it came to me and a lot of them were mis-aligned. I plugged the offending holes with toothpicks but do not have extra pickguard screws on hand. . . some are on the way with my latest electronics order from

If there are any issues with it or it arrives shifted due to climate, let me know. I'm also super interested in feedback from the outside world on these builds. Hopefully, this one will get played hard! Mooselumps stepped up to the plate on this one. He emailed me and basically wanted "the works" on this bass. I sent him an itemized quote based on the specs requested (not particularly cheap options), and he said go for it! I'm happy to report that everything that can be done to squeeze maximum performance from this instrument has now been done.
