Basses that just sound BAD...

Some basses are just dead, not the whole line or make, but some are bad. Here's my %*#! list of the ones that have left lasting bad tastes in my ears.

Out of the four Alembics, I've played [Two old and two new] both of the new ones were dead, no tone, just flat and dead.

The Pedulla Rapture, I was not inthralled by its glory.

Cheep Fernandeses are thin.

Epiphone lp bass, the only bass I ever sold.

I have a SRX-500 and it is kick ass. What kind do you have embelisher? I think that GSR's and low end SRX's (SRX-300) don't sound nearly as good as higher end SRX's. :hmm:

I have more to add. Basses with Lightwave pickups sound by far worse than anything else, but here's some more:


-Wish Basses. They look cool, but I don't think the builders have sound in mind when they make one.

-Modulus Flea Basses. The earlier ones with the Lane Poor pickups. They sounded so, so dead.

-Alembics. They sound clunky to me.

-Fender Bronco Basses. Talking about bad pickups. It's a good thing those died.

You know, so many people praised those things as being the most badassed instrument ever, with the pickup to match. I had mine for 2 weeks, put it back in the box and sent it packing! Coming off of a Spector NS4CRFM at the time, the tone and feel and sound just didn't even compare. It was very sterile, and as you put it, dead. I understand a lot of that was the graphite, but still. It was just, like, there. :hmm:

I agree. I am suprised to read the responses concerning "high end" basses that do not sound good, but I have to remember that everyone has different tastes and opinions. An Alembic that sucks? I would be pissed if I paid that kind of money for a bass and found out that it actually sounds bad!

The SRX's have a different pickup than the Soundgears. The Soundgears are weak and thin, where as the SRX's are decent.

I wouldn't say an Alembic sucks, in the least, but it definitely has a very specific sound that if you're not down with, you're not really going to like it. The one's I've played were pretty pingy and didn't have that much "oomph" and punch like say a Spector does. Then again, there's possibly many, many misguided players out there who think Fenfer is the only way to go! :D I honestly wouldn't play a Fender/Ampeg rig if you were paying me more money than God. I hate and can't stand either. I'd have to be paying YOU so I could play Spector and Mesa. It's that simple.

I don't dislike Alembic basses, just the two crappy ones I played, you can't generalize and say "this brand sucks" cuz then yer jus be'in ignorant.To me the price that a company sets their instrument at is meaningless. When I play a bass, I am playing that bass not every bass by that builder, I've played some cheap basses that kill and some 2000 + basses that suck. And also keep in mind, just because you think that a bass sucks does not mean that some one that hears you play said bass will notice any difference other then your grumbling.

And I like fender P-basses and own a ampeg so :spit:

I like mesa 400s, really for me it's more of a "it must be tube." I have a SVT cl [#0066] because it gave me back the sound of the bass I put through it. I feel the same way about Spectors as you do about fenders; many players that I like use them, but they just aren't me. My main bass though is a 93 sr 505, it gets the sound I love, and I've played the finish off the neck. :D

I'll put my SRX-500 up against any four string out there. Dead serious. With new strings that thing has a full tonal palate and is very playable. It's like a knife thru the mix also. Just absolutely correct.

When I saw aerosmith play a couple of weeks ago they used a PFly4 and it sounded great. Awesome tone and no complaints from me. I thought it looked ****ty before I saw it live but I'd love to have one after seeing it.

well, This guy at my school started playing bass, and I asked him to let me try it out, and the bass, I'm not sure the name, It was totally copied after a MM Stingray. And that is the worst sound I have ever heard come out of a bass, It is even worse than my crappy Ibanez Soundgear! Ugh... If someone knows what the name of the bass is by my description, please tell me
