Basses that just sound BAD...

BR rich basses.....even the top end ones sound horrible

Ive played a couple warwicks that just sound horrible..but then plenty that sound awsome!

a few P basses and such, lots of ibanez i didnt like....it really just matters if you got a "lemon" with all the cheap basses, they vary so much between each bass.

Personally, I find that the price of the bass may or may not have anything to do with quality of sound. I've played cheap basses that sounded cheap and then there's my stand-by Squier.... I still play it and it's the first bass I started on. It looks, sounds and feels amazing, although I did outfit it with Duncan QPs. With Squier, you win some and you lose some. Don't knock it though.... you might be surprised.

I think the worst is that "tin can" bass tone that can be found in many low-end Danelectros. Cold, clanky... they just sound PLASTIC. It's terrible. This is often present in other low-budget basses with cheap electronics. Incidentally, you can improve an existing bass by modding the pickups. It does a world of good, believe it or don't.

At the opposite end of the spectrum are basses that offer nothing but horrible mud. Gibson EBs are the worst.... have I mentioned I hate short-scale? I always find short-scale to either have extremely floppy strings (resulting in Gibson "mud-fart" tone) or a bright, pingy tone that sounds like you dropped a ping-pong ball on a hardwood floor. Give me 34" or give me death! Another disadvantage of short-scale is perpetual nosedive, but that's another topic altogether....

Its funny to see so many great sounding basses mentioned here. In Particular Fender p's, j's and Warwicks. Since alot of music is recorded with these basses that gaves a good indication that they dont sound bad at all. But everyone is entitled to their opinions i guess.... :rolleyes:
I think every bass deserves a chance..there are so many factors that go into the way a bass sounds (strings, amps, setup etc)
Some cheap basses may sound bad but what can you expect for the price?

I'm surprised this thread has not been locked yet, but in my opinion, there are no basses that sound "bad", only players who sound bad.

Some basses may have tones you don't like, but there are very few basses out there that a competant player couldn't wrangle a useable tone out of.

If you can't get a good sound out of a bass, its probably not the bass ;)
