Basses whose quality exceeds price

+1

I'd add Fender '50s classic P-bass, the '60s classic Jazz, and Sadowsky Metro.

I have to agree here. I was messing around with three Classic '50's P-Basses in a store yesterday. I was really impressed with them. I already have two good P's, so I don't need another. But of course, I keep thinking about them anyway. :rollno:

And while some might scoff at the idea of a Sadowsky of any kind having a "value that exceeds the price", again I agree with Jim. I continue to be amazed with my Metro UV70.

I have been using my Schecter bass for 4 years now. It amezes me yet how many different tones one can achieve outta this things. Sounds excelent and looks incredible. One of the few mass production brands with a sort of "original" feel: you look at a Schecter, and you know is a Schecter right away, specially the Stilleto series.

Another great find, and we cannot say it enough, are the Squier Vintage Modified. A little money later in a better bridge and there you go. But stock they're great.

And in the really cheap and amazing side of the Force, Washburn T24- T25. Crappy electronics aside (not that crappy, though) they're mahogany, necktrough and as value per money efficient as can get.

i wuv my essexy sjb75c. i've thought about modding it (upgrade pups, maybe add a P pup), but it just sounds so good as is...
this bass has been on 2 mini-tours, survived sub-zero weather, 90-degree heat, thick fog, people putting keyboards and drums on it (HMMF!), salty and sandy beaches, and still is in perfect form.

i think yamaha trbs are up there. the new tag says $800 or so and they can be found for 4-600. im talking about the newer ones, but the older ones are up there aswell.

btw cosmetics have a lot to do with price. so if your looking for a beater bass your going to get a good deal somewhere on an expensive bass that just doesnt look so hot.

My '96 Carvin LB75 fits the title of this thread.
It was $804 delivered to my door in a hardshell case, made exactly as I wanted it. I still have it, and it's better than ever with age. The wood quality cannot be exceeded for any price, and the electronics happened to suit my choice of woods very well.
I have done hundreds of gigs with it, recorded many times, and nothing but compliments on it's sound.

It would help (IMO) if the OP came up with a price range that he's interested in since the price range of some of the basses mentioned go from $179 to over $2k.

The OP didn't put any type of parameters (tone, 4 string, 5 string, weight, etc) around his search, just that it would be a "good deal", whatever that means.

Here are some of my favorite deals on used basses:

1990s Hamer Cruise Basses - These are boutique quality basses that can be had for under $500. Incredible value.

Old US made Peaveys - More great bang for the buck here.

MIJ Fenders - During certain time periods, these had better quality control than the stuff coming out of the US factory.

He just mentions that he's been playing for 6 months so I think everyone is assuming he wants an inexpensive bass, but the OP doesn't mention a price range, just quality relative to price.

Definitely agree on Peavey, and Yamaha but I have to make special mention of the new Squiers -- great basses for the money and IMO, the best of them all is the Squier Deluxe Jazz Active 5.

It's hard to beat this bass at this price point ($299)

:: hope's Iota's enjoying the Active V he recently got from me. :: Nut width on it was just to wide for my apparently girly necked basses preference. :-)
