Basses whose quality exceeds price

It would help (IMO) if the OP came up with a price range that he's interested in since the price range of some of the basses mentioned go from $179 to over $2k.

The OP didn't put any type of parameters (tone, 4 string, 5 string, weight, etc) around his search, just that it would be a "good deal", whatever that means.

Ya, we've got $100 SX's and Sadowsky NYC's in here. "To Me" a Sadowsky would need to come equipped ready to provide sexual favor's in order for it's quality to exceed it's price point.

I agree, the OP should have put some sort of a price range on it... Sadowsky does not fit on the bargain list. Anywhere.

In the $400-700 range, I've had very good luck with LTD and Schecter. Below that look at SX. Never owned a bass more expensive than my Schecter Stiletto Elite-5, and I probably never will.

I have two MIM Fenders with active electronics, a 5-string J and a 4-string P-Bass special. Both play like butter and have unbelievable tone. My only complaint on both would be the stock Fender bridge, which I replaced on both with Leo Quan B-A bridges. That said, all stock Fender bridges are terrible and should be replaced.

+1 on all the comments made thus far about Schecter. There are good basses to be had for less but I'd go so far as to say that in in the above $299 and under $799, that $500 range, there is nothing as good as a Schecter. YMMV.

Ibanez BTB, plays better or just as good as other basses over 1000$. And they look great, very versatile EQ too. But the neck and body are the star on the whole bass.

I've played stingrays, Fenders, Spector Euro, and rickenbacker.

NONE have exceeded my basses playability, the MM and Spector came close but thats it.

70's - 80's Japanese-made Ibanez get my vote. Love my '79 Silver Series PJ! Modded with SD QPs and Badass II bridge, cost me under NZ$600 all up.

They seem to come up for sale quite often in this neck of the woods, and they're great value for the prices you can pay. Don't know if they're so common in the UK or US though.

Valenti, hands down. My Valenti J5 is amazing in both feel and tone. It's super light weight and punches through brick walls. I only paid $2000 for a bass I should have paid $3000 for.

I'll have to include a vote for the Peavey USA made Cirrus basses. I've played Alembic for the last 10 years (which is obviouly not in the "costs less than it should" catigory ;)) but, while my Alembic is in the shop, I've been playing a $900 Cirrus and almost every gig somebody mentions how great they think it sounds. I really enjoy playing it, not as much as my Alembic, but for the money it's dang hard to beat:)
